Having fractured my left scaphoid - and sitting here very bored in plaster, are there any after fracture products that can lessen the chance of it happening again?
I know when I fractured my shoulder they said 12 months until it reduces to less than ย 60% chance if I fall again .
Are there any wrist guards out there that work - and are actually not too intrusive?
Mobius X8 are pretty good.
You can limit the travel on them.
As used by plenty of the MX guys with wrist injurys.
Guards anywhere just move the pressure if you crash and stop you naturally building up the muscles/ flexibility to stop it happening again. Time and being careful is now my fix for injuries, bones will generally fix fine its all the stuff connecting them which cause the longer term issues IME.
661 wrist guards are fine but nothing will beat just sucking eggs and slowly getting the hand / wrist strength back after months of atrophy and immobilisation.
I have tried a standard wrist brace but removed the metal bracing and replaced with some plastic that had a flex that felt good. Trip to Wilkinsons and trying different chopping boards and other odd stuff to find it. Not sure if this would stop another break but it added support and stopped strain. It would offer some protection but main use for me was get me riding sooner with less strain on wrist.
Now wearing a cheap weight lifting brace for support but this is years later but this is more for support / pain management than protection.
661 Wrist Wrap (not pro), couldn't get one in my size.
TLD WS 5205, holds your wrist at an unnaturally straight angle which was painful.
Not a doctor obviously but was under the impression smaller bones can heal much quicker than the larger ones.
When I broke the Ulna and Radius in two places each near the joint it was 6 weeks plaster then a couple of weeks with a wrist support.
The physio was very vocal about not using a support when I asked a similar question.
There is low blood flow into the wrist which means it takes longer to heal.
I have an Allsport Dynamic and a Mobius wrist brace, both are pretty expensive but work well at supporting a weak wrist and lessening pain. Whether they would actually stop an injury, I don't know but they can limit the backwards movement which could possibly help. The Allsport brace does a better job of limiting movement as it has a hard stop but it requires glove modification to wear. The Mobius one is far easier to wear as it can just fit over a standard glove. Cheaper braces can often have more material on the palm area which gets annoying, neither of mine are noticeable when riding.
