How thick is the wall of an alloy chainstay? Got this frame for a parts bin build and I’m happy with the large area of scratching towards the back of it but at the front there’s some rubbing that looks like it might have been from a chainring that has put a 1-2 mm groove into the metal. It’s a bit hard to assess because it’s on the area of the chainstay that is dented to give space for a chainring so may not be as deep as it appears. Or it might be…😬

The large messy scuff area - chainsuck? Might be OK on it's own, although hard to tell from pics.
The large looking gouge further forward; if it's as bad as it looks in the image - that would put me off.

Yeah. Assuming you’re not doing massive jumps / gaps. Worst case scenario a chainstay fails it probably won’t be the end of the world. If it was a fork or bars my response would be very different.

All my bikes looked like that in the 90s when chainsuck was fashionable. Never had a progression to failure despite dropping off everything I could see. I was only ten stone though. Not sure I'd send drops on that if I was a big lad.

That front gouge where the tube has been crimped and near that cable guide weld looks like a potential perfect storm of stress concentration and weakened tubing. However, it’s only one of four tubes holding the rear wheel so it’s unlikely to cause a catastrophic crash…

Agree, I've snapped two frames in the rear triangle and, when it happened, both times it initially just felt like my tyre had gone flat.

I'd ride it too. If it breaks it's unlikely to be catastrophic, more that the bike starts crabbing sideways.
I have seen worse. And ridden worse.
Surely the answer is a cheap new frame from the Chiggle fire sale?

If it fails it won't be a nasty one, as said above it'll feel like a flat tyre or possible some sideways movement.
Would there be any benefit in filing any burrs and filling it with some liquid metal putty or similar? Or would that make no difference?
Just a matter of time till it snaps. If I was skint then I'd be tempted to sand and fill it and apply a carbon wrap over the top and keep riding it.

I'd ride it, even if it cracks I can't see it being spectacular or cause you to instantly fly over the bars.

Hold on, there's no evidence it's an On One.
I had a chainstay snap there before after a bit a bad chainsuck. The first I noticed was the wheel rubbing as I started honking up a hill but I still managed to cycle home.
As others say, you'll be fine as long as you're not doing jumps/drops.

The chain rub looks fine to me. It's the 2nd picture with the triangle removed that looks like a deal breaker for me.
Probably, at least if it breaks it’ll be a safe break

Yes pretty cheap because of ‘scratches on chainstay’ not ‘deep gouge on chainstay’

I think that’s just paint and the angle of the photo. That section looks ok to me, it’s the gouge bit I’m worried about

Justified in asking for refund if that was just described as "scratches".

Probably smooth off the rough edges of those ugly gouges first with some wet and dry though.
