That second one is like my bikes. The first one is impressive.

I think you'll find lots of folks on this forum ride bikes with frames that are too small for them with long stems and set back seat posts with 30cm plus of post showing.

yep i'm one of those, i should have an XL frame, but i prefer a slightly smaller frame so i can chuck it around on the downhills and then the seat height doesn't matter

I have more post showing than that but then my hardtail is also used for jumping. Should probably be on a 16" really but then it'd probably feel a bit of a handful for the jumps..

I know it's a bit of a cliche but are you saying wheelbase and (to a lesser extent) standover height have no bearing on how a bike handles?

I entirely agree, I fell for that line too, but bigger bikes are faster. I've taken a BMX round a trail center before, you can't argue aginst BMX being the best handling bikes, but in terms of corner speed it's actualy really slow.

That and the bigger bikes have a lot more space over the top tube to move arround in, what's the point of huge standover clerance, if the bars are so close to your hips that you can't actualy shift your weight foreward (assuming the bars are an equal distance behind the front wheel on all sizes, so weighting the front wheel is actualy function of how far you can get from the rear wheel).

That's the one reason I haven't bought a '5', they don't fit me, a 20" felt OK (could actualy be longer), but I can happily ride a 17" seatube and a reverb post so I'm losing all that room!

Really want to learn to braze and find an old 5 swingarm........

I'm 5' 11" - and I can't think of a bike I've ridden with a top tube that ever felt too short.

My 8 mountain bikes range between a lowly 17" and 18.5" seattube length and the one that feels especially bang on is the 17" Ibis (with a 65mm stem). It manuals and pops thru' the air like a dream. Smaller has always been better for me, but the bikes in some of those photos are freakin' ridiculous!

I used to ride a 17" and my current 14-15" bikes feel way better. Even with the seat slammed on the 17 it felt like it was in the way too much. Standover height/clearance makes a big difference imo. Problem is I have short legs, so I can get away with smaller frames and just have to put up with short top tubes because long stems feel horrible on mtbs.

I think its one of those things you come across time and time again when first getting into mtbing and reading the forums;

"Buy as small a bike as possible cos it'll be more 'chuckable'."

A bit like "nobody rides a 29er" and "the Orange Five is old-hat".

Not sure what you mean by no corner speed tbh but its not surprising that a MTB is the best bike for a MTB specific trail

If you can show me dirt jumpers and danny mac type jumpers on 20 " frame 29 ers then I will reject the small is chuckable line you wish to refute.

Im 6 foot (admittedly with a 31 inch leg so not the longest legs) and my last bike was a medium... I got a large recently because it s the "right size" for me and its now up for sale 3 weeks later... its a lovely bike, but feels rubbish in the air and downhill to me, fine pedalling up hill.

back to the medium for the el guapo! So please dont try and tell me small frames dont feel better!

My road bike has a 56cm top tube, mtb's arround 60cm, road bikes don't need to be stable.

You could go as fast as you like into a corner, 'turned in like a go cart' but all that happened it is it skid/drif/slide and lost speed.

Is Dany mac's frame actualy small? I've no idea how trials top tubes measure up.

I'm not denying a small frame may well be better for jumping/tricks/trials, but even a BMX race bike or 4x bike is longer than a jump bike. Heck, they're longer than a lot of 'medium' hardcore hardtails!
