what did he crash on? doesn't seem to have been much there to have caused it?

I specialise in that particular form of unexplained crash on a normal trail. Not lost a bike though...

In the alps last year one of our group was very good at loosing his bike. Zooming down some steep stuff in a ferny forest with little braking control being screamed at to stop then finding everyone scouring the mountain side to find a Meta 66 was a memorable moment. Just vanished!

There were some wooden stakes every 10 metres or so, you can see them if you look carefully.
