Looking for a good value work stand. The Halfords Bike Hut one gets good reviews and is only £40.

Any thoughts on this or other options?

Mine was from Lidl. Cost about £20-£25, I forget which, a couple of years ago. It's been absolutely solid.

My dad has an Edinburgh Bike Co. one that I saw for the first time the other day and was mighty impressed. Good clamp, folding legs and the mast was coated so it glides up and down easily. Very nice, didn't ask the price but even if expensive, I'd have said good VFM because of the quality.

I've got the x-tools one from crc/wiggle.

It's solidly built, and folds neatly. It comes with a bike sized mat that collects crud/oil/grease you might spill.

I've got a Lidl one; works well for less than £30, has lasted over 4 years, maintaining 4-6 bikes of various types.

I've been looking in my local Lidl but it's a case of hoping they have one in when I need it ie this weekend.

@woody2000 - is the one you link to any good. Looks promising.

The Aldi one I have has been great it was £25/30. Saw it at the weekend for £20. Good bargain at that price.

mine was from Aldi, but had to be modified as some of the clamps didn't clamp very well, so now have pins through them. Otherwise £25 well spent.

I have two, a Lidle £20 one and I got given a much better one from an old shop.

I used the Lidle one for a while but in all honesty I think it's pretty crap, the clamp is rubbish and the folding feet stick out so far that you're always tripping over on them.

If you plan on using it a lot I'd spend a few more quid and get a better one.

Aldi in Eccles and Knutsford have the work stands for £20 at the moment, others may have too

Also interested in this - anyone know of any options around clamping in a vice?

I've also got the ultimate hardware one that Woody has linked to. It's not had loads of abuse but have done a great job on the occasions I have used it - indexing gears, adjusting cable disc brakes and fitting new wheels to my cc bike. For £40 I can't complain, it's reasonably adjustable, has a small tool tray and most important for me, folds up when not needed.

One thing of note, the footprint is quite large when fully unfolded, it means it's really stable but you'll need plenty of space to set it up

I have had a Lidl type one for about 6 years or so. they are ok but nothing compared to my Park one I have now.

So much more stable and easy to use.

The money is well spent if you work on bikes a reasonable amount.

I know people who've had a couple of cheaper stands and ended up spending more than my basic Park PCS9 cost me. My Park doesn't have a quick release grip, doesn't fold much (not very portable) but handles my 35lbs enduro type bike fine and is really stable. I'd buy a 2nd Park next time if I had to.

Cheers all

I've gone for the Park PCS9. On offer for £78 at the moment and the extra money is worth it to me safe in the knowledge no critical parts will be made of cheese plastic.

I was watching this thread with interest and like Danny was looking at a park pcs9 (the 2nd hand one on eBay at 45 quid). Ended up persuading myself that a park prs3 OS would be good - and got lucky with one on eBay just under 100 quid.

That thing is solid! Also comes with tool tray. And the base is solid piece of flat metal - no legs to trip over. Chap who sold it was shutting his lbs down and had stood in front of this stand for 15-20 years!
