So, I've just had a phone call & need to make some serious decisions

Not least - what's the riding like out there?

I know there's loads around Rotorua & Queenstown, but that's not going to work out for 'normal' riding around work / weekends

Any hints / tips would be greatly appreciated

Sods law a week after I buy a fat bike too!

Woodhill, sandy base, great in the winter, but poor in the summer, actually unrideable really and dangerous. But actually some good trails out there. Hunua is a good option. Drains well, cool twisty trails. Challenging climbs (in wet). New gravity park coming soon. Then Riverhead trails. There is some good riding but its taken a while to get over the lack of land access and the need to get into the car to go to places to ride, rather than just from my front door.

Just wish there were some group night rides.

Thanks - It's a shame about the access you're right!

How come woodhill is so bad in the summer? Is it so sandy it's like a beach?

Rotorua is only 2 1/2 - 3 hrs away saw plenty down there for day trips. Have a look at the Auckland bike club pages

You get smooth trails and then hit a deep patch of sand. It can get very much like beach. But in the winter it runs great.

I got pretty bored of Woodhill when I was based in Auckland.
