so my wife is after a road bike, has anyone seen any good deals?
the criteria is basically;
carbon
about £1000
small/50cm ish
pretty colour (not black, this criteria rules all)
Preferably easier gearing, 32t cassette etc...
so far the planetx pro 105 is by far the best value, she likes the pink they do but they don’t have stock and when I asked wouldn’t confirm if they would again or not.
We live in the southern alpes so uk or European shop is ok, unfortunately this rules out second hand, at least from the uk...
any suggestions would be great!
thanks
paul
Cannondale do some great road bikes (I have two) both mens/unisex (there certainly not women specific anyway) as long as the bike is the correct size for her, I ride 50 and 52cm, I'm not overly convinced that there's much difference geometry wise, I think sometimes it's just a case that bike manufactures bang the price up just because it's got more of a feminine paint job. Just look for models that offer smaller frame sizes and then she can take her pick on what she likes the look off, otherwise your just limiting the choice that's out there.
Thanks, I have thought about that. There was a nice synapse with tiagra around that price but it was black so she wasn’t too keen!
How tall is she ? I am not convinced taller women really need "women specific" - it is such an ill defined area and lets be honest a marketing concept more than a real thing.
Anyway I am 5ft and just bought a Liv Avail - it is fantastic. The spec is perfect for me straight out of the box in the the important stuff (38 cm bars, 165mm cranks) and it came with 34 at the back.
These are Giant's womens bikes and have loads of different models for different prices.
She’s 164cm, that sort of gearing sounds good
Forget Carbon at that price. You will get a much better bike in alloy then a cheap carbon will ever be.
I love my Liv langma*, but it's going to be above that budget and I think most of the carbon Liv's will be similar. I was surprised how much difference female specific geometry made for me (although to be fair now I know what I'm trying to replicate I have got my other bikes much closer in fit with a few tweaks).
*Technically I don't have one at the moment because I wrote it off but it will be replaced like for like once the insurance payout comes through...
After the liv heads up this looks good;
hels, what size frame fits you?
I am not sure what the frame size is, but I bought the Liv Avail XXS.
If you're looking at Liv bikes (which are, quite excellent - both of the girls in my life ride them) then I would recommend a nose at Partridge Cycles. They seem to carry a lot of the shop-soiled, nearly new bikes that distributors don't want to sell through retail and dump through shops like this. They have a good range at good prices and, if you drop them an email, will send detailed pictures of any marks on a bike you are interested in.
I've got two identical Liv Avail SL1 as I bought one for my wife and, before she had even ridden it, my daughter claimedit, so I had to buy a second one! The first came from an LBS as an end-of-season deal, but when I came to buy the second, all I could find there were bikes that were much more expensive for lower specs, so I bought a shop-soiled one from Partridge through their website. Being honest, I could barely tell the difference between the two bikes and if you challenged me to point out which was which, I think I would struggle now.
Friendly guys and good service. Recommended.
Best bet is to go to a shop that has a nice choice of makes, try a few, they do all ride differently, for example, we have two same size carbon bikes (one's a planet x, other is a Cannondale) but ride quality is so much better on the latter, however, you will get a better spec for the money with a Planet X, just food for thought.
Also, if you're after a LIV, go direct and buy from a Giant shop, they will do you a better deal, sometimes they have offers on where if you buy a bike from them, they will throw in up to £100's worth of free accessories/clothing, or a certain percentage of the bike value.
Don’t restrict yourself to women’s bikes. None of my bikes are women’s bikes. You just need the correct frame size and a women’s saddle.

This x 100. Fit is everything. Don't buy by sight alone, have a test ride. Any shop worth it's salt will tell you this. Female specific saddle can be added easily. We sell to fit the rider & their requirements not their gender
Unfortunately due to where we live, near Barcelonette, the shops have limited choices and are super expensive. Also due to the nature of our job, we own a hotel, we don’t have the time to go to shops so blind purchase is the only way.
at 164cm she is bang in the middle of the liv small size so I think that’s the one for her. She’s never ridden a road bike before so therefore it WILL be the best road bike she’s ever ridden!
Can't test ride & never ridden a road bike before. Good luck!
Ade at RivieraBike in Molini is selling a berry little use small sized Cube C62 disc braked Ultegra spec road bike, might be worth giving him an email.
You live in the Alps? Where is your nearest Decathlon?
This gets VERY good reviews.... B Twin Ultra 900.
gap is our closest decathlon, unfortunately with that b-twin we are back in the realm of 'boring' colours...
