Interesting that some of these are still topics of discussion on STW today ๐Ÿ™‚
Don't wear loud hued leggings
Don't contest the right of way with capable cars
Don't allow dear little Fido to accompany you

"Don't scratch a match on the seat of your bloomers"

Those Victorian era girls were obviously more fun than we've been told...

Unbelieveable that it was ever ok for a load of blokes to pin two women to the ground and rip some of their clothes off in front of 200 people and then boast about it in the local newspaper.

I read that as 2 women ripping the skirts off; not that it makes it any more acceptable ๐Ÿ˜‰

I assumed the "strong armed members" were members of an all women cycling club.
200 spectators turning up just to watch a club run set off though, what's that all about ?

Love the term "scorcher". I'll have to start using that one whenever I can. ๐Ÿ˜€

And the rule about throwing your legs over the handlebar while coasting, I take it that's referring to riders on Ordinary, rather than Safety, bicycles.

Could be, it's just that coasting downhill with your legs over the bars on an ordinary was a common practice as it allowed for a safer* dismount in an emergency.

*"Safer" as in flying through the air feet first rather than head first.

Interesting also that the phrase 'scorching' is being used for racing. I had assumed that kind of language came from the automobile age with smoking tyres, but apparently not.

I think the modern phrase "attack position" should be replaced with "scorching position".

"Don't contest the right of way with cable cars."

Sound advice for all there. Playing chicken with trams is rarely a good idea.

Actually, there is a certain Lady of this parish who frequently wears a short skirt over her "bloomers" - and very elegant she looks too!

was all the fashion when cyclist as a leisure pursuit exploded back in the day..

read the book/blog bike Bike Snob.

far better to read 'The Lost Cyclist' by David V Herlihy which gives a more interesting and insightful account of the time..

Rule number one - 'Don't be a fright' ..first rule of bikeclub
