I’ve moved to Dunstable not so long ago and been meaning to get up there for a lookaround as it should really be my local. Found myself with a free morning tomorrow now, any pointers or just follow my nose and ask who I see ? Not been there for about 3 years and only really rode the park back then . Last time there was some official/unofficial trail taking shape with limited sinagae . Thanks in advance for your help
1st of all my commiserations on moving to Dunstable 😉
The lonslade trail is signed from the sandy lane car park it's about 10k and reasonably fun and signs are ok, but bit vague in places, you may have to follow the trail on places
Other side of the road by the church has more to offer but not signed.
It's wet & muddy at the moment, but still rideable.
I'd offer to show up round but can't do tomorrow ( family stuff means it's mostly night rides these days)
It's week worth exploring and getting lost there, there's a lot of fun off piste stuff I can put together a 25k+ ride including the lonslade trail without too much hassle
Park up at the top of Church Road from the funny double roundabout in Woburn Sands. Google maps shows this point as 'Cyclone Mountain Bike Meeting Point'.
There's a gate opposite the cottage. Once through the gate go sharp right, you should see the signs for the the trail.
The signs can be tricky to spot, and don't take you back to the car park (god only knows why), but if you get to the end take a left through the woods and a right when you hit the wide sandy track, and you should get back to the car park.
Often when you park up someone else is about to go out and they'll take you around. Sadly busy tomorrow myself...
Lonslade on it's own is okay for a pootle. There has been some improvements as, at first, it felt like a whole load of up. Best is to combine bits and pieces with the more fun, off-piste 'mermaids' and 'church-side' trails and extend it to Rushmere. More than happy to show you around but I think my only window this weekend is Sunday. :/
And yeah, this time of year it's a mud fest in the lower areas.
Thanks all will have a nose ! It’s a mud fest everywhere so will just get on with it !! I’ve moved from Watford so believe it or not where I am in Dunstable is an Improvement 🙂
In the summer Dunstable will be a great place for accessing miles of Chilterns single track
Your also not too far from Chicksands
Well back and it’s fair to say it’s not a great trail with all the gloop. the first 5 k wasn’t fun in the slightest , after I’d got up a hill it was a bit more friendly. Would be good for a summer night ride ..I’m sure I’m missing the best of the place however so someone fancy’s a bit of guiding one day I’d buy the beer !
Ampthill I know chicky we’ll last time I was there it fractured a vertibrae Looking forward to more exploring of the chilterns In the summer have some nice loops local but no more than 17 miles
Go out with one of the groups (e.g. cyclone) to find the best stuff, it's not immediately obvious.
In Dunstable you're not far from the Berkhemsted groups too.
Funnily enough I moved from Watford to Dunstable! I was at Woburn yesterday for about five minutes... until my too short new chain ****ed my rear mech. email in profile if you want to meet up.
You've got great stuff around you; up to the Downs for a loop, up past Whipsnade and into Ashridge. Or you can drop down via the Sewell greenway and into Rushmere, plenty there, then over to Woburn via Brickhill. And yes, you could drop down to Tring and head to Wendover and the chiltern Ridgeway.
I often ride Woburn, Rushmere and sometimes add on The Downs if I want a bigger day.
We ride out of Leighton Buzzard on Thursday nights, Market Square 7.30 - all comers welcome.
