Last year's 'bargain' Ulvang socks haven't lasted they year - they've felted themselves up in to non-stretchy clumps of wool. While they lasted they were OK though.

What's hot in the world of socks?

I'd go and spend my life savings on some more Woolie Boolies but they're not quite the perfect length (not long enough) to warrant that sort of an investment.

and obviously must be hardy enough to survive my mega intense washing routine. Woolie Boolies survive it, Endura Baa Baa's survived it, Ulvang didn't.

I previously had some Garburn ones, which were ace but also, too short. Lasted me about 4 years before I wore through the heels and the Mrs threw them out.

I wonder if the Ulvang ones are variable in quality.

I bought a set last year and they are all ok bar one which shrunk. The others did plenty of miles running which didn't cause any issues.

My Ulvang ones have lasted great, they just need a stretch when they're still wet.

Failing that, I've always got on with Planet X thicky merinos.

Woolie boolies do come in a longer 6" cuff length if you search for them. Prefer the regular 4" cuff myself.

Have always hated seaskinz but I've seen the light with these hydro stop versions
They are mentally expensive (got mine on offer with an extra discount at go outdoors)
They have improved massively since I last bought a pair
Come in 3 lengths and two weights, merino inside, hydrostop thing on the cuff
And a "lifetime" guarantee

Never had a problem with Ulvang either. Got some merino socks from Aldi the other week and first impressions are good but not washed them yet.

Not the merino/silk dogtooth ones from Vulpine, they've shrunk more than a new-plastic-fiver-in-the-tumble-dryer

My Ulvangs have been doing OK, but to be honest I often wear a thinner pair of MTB socks anyway!

Sealskinz for me, irrespective of whether it's wet or not. They are just warmer than anything else I've tried.

Ulvang socks are still cheap on ebay. Mine have shrunk a little but stretch out after wearing them a few minutes.

I also rate the Planet X Thick Merino Socks. I paid £5 for 3 pairs a few weeks back but they are back to £10 for 3 pairs (for now).

My Ulvang ones were hit and miss, but so cheap it didn't matter.

PX thicky merino for me. Cheap and decent.

I didn't like the Thickys, didn't feel the nicest and got threadbare quite quickly. To be fair at least they didn't shrink like the thin versions.

Another vote for the Planet X thickies. Had mine 18 months now, comfy, warm and ridden all year round mtb and road and still in great nick.

Had these for last two winters - same pair still going strong.

Lasted much better than my seal skins which wore a hole in the toe after one winter

I'll second the bridgedake hikers socks, not so tight round the ankles as woollie billies but lasting really well.

Had ulvang with no issues but prefer the smartwool ones from tkmaxx, they are on their second winter with no signs of wear.
