put some 80 mm Rebas on this and use it as a pansy-enduro bike? Road climb followed by a mostly XC descent, with a few rough technical sections but no jumps or drops. Plan is to ride it to work and do a quick off-road loop on the way home, but not sure how robust these frames are.

a few rough technical sections

Are any of those rough technical sections likely to be harder than, say, descending off Whernside in the 3 Peaks CX race on max 33mm tyres on CX bikes? I think you'll be fine.

Nah, it’ll be fine.

the steering might be a bit ‘flip flop’ but it will be fine for normal pub rides/commuting etc.

I fitted 80mm forks on a ‘92 marin eldridge for many years, it was fine.

With that ride - I'd think of it more XC than enduro . Depends what your aspirations are.

I aspire to be a gnarly enduro dude, but honest observers would probably call it XC.

I would expect the wheels to go first,

Yes, that was kinda my thinking, if the wheels don't buckle, the frame's probably fine.

I had an old trek 850 ridged back in the day. Frame took anything I threw at it, but I did get through a couple of rims, like others have said. Otherwise you will be fine.

Will be fine.

If you are able to add more travel ... 120 mm or so ... will be even more fun.

Old XC frames with new, long travel forks are FUN !

Depends (maybe?) a bit on the biking skills if you ruin the frame. I always was worried about the "travel" the bike was designed for. But "more" travel normally works fine. A good fork will transform such a bike...

Have fun!

Well, sounds like some strangers on the internet have given it their seal of approval. That makes it official, so full steam ahead. If I don't survive this mission, nice knowing you all.

Whaddya mean will you die?

The head tube will snap and dump me on my face. I'll lie there immobilized with a broken neck and die of starvation while badgers gnaw the flesh from my bones. Centuries from now, the Children of the Forest will find my bleached bones and use them to make necklaces to sell to tourists.

That's worst case scenario. Most likely the bike will explode and you will be vaporised in the resulting fireball.

Ok, all finished, no dramas except a couple of exploding tyres and sealant everywhere. Felt quick riding around the block and down to Starbucks. I'll take it for a proper ride tomorrow.

The difference in those tyre sizes hurts my eyes. Also, is there any clearance between the front tyre and the fork?!

There's actually plenty, it's just the camera angle. The tyre is a 2.25, comfortable fit for a Reba.

Well, that thing turned out to be a rocketship uphill. Bit sketchy downhill. About 2 seconds slower than my best time on a 26" Anthem over a 25 minute ride, gained 30 seconds on the road climb, lost it on the descent.
