Title just to draw in the right crowd ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, I have a Pro II hooked upto a 721 with oneup42 on the back. Last weekend i heard a lovely crack, thought it was the usual grit/contact point thing, as usual i ignored it and did a couple more rides on it. But Tuesday night i went to take the rear wheel of the bike to stick it in the car and low and behold the freehub falls off. So this was probably the "crack". It was all being held together by the maxel. So put it back together (sandwiched together with the maxel again) and carried on.

However i have one of those Enduro things this weekend and very little time for my usual source to obtain and fix the axel - will i die?

I'm surprised you are even asking the question.

I sold a set of wheels with Hope XC hubs a few years ago. Me and my mate, the prospective customer, were changing the bearings in the rear hub only to find that the rear axle was snapped completely in 2. No idea how long I had been riding like that but it did sort of confirm the hub needed maintenance. I then broke the spoke flange trying to drift the bearings out.
Anyway, if the problem was in the front wheel, I would recommend not entering a racing event, however, as its the rear wheel, what's the worst that can happen? A longer than planned walk maybe?
I had a mate lose his rear wheel out of the frame entirely once and he was ok. Go race!!

It'll be right if it's a bolt through not a qr.

I did the same a couple of months ago, order a replacement but accidentally ended up with a 135x12 instead of a 142x12 - still not got around to ordering another it. It is a quick and easy fix though.

Only thing with racing would be if you flatted you'd need to remember to be careful, sods law you'd forget it in the heat of the moment... queue free hub, pawls and springs ejecting into the undergrowth.

I have no idea how far I'd ridden on a broken 12mm pro 2 the first time I did it, in my Herb, I only found out when I took the wheel out and the freehub fell off. I didn't die. But then it had a very solid, full thickness 12mm axle so that was probably just taking all the strain.

yes, it's a 12mm bolt thru so was thinking it would probably be fine. I did get a flat Tuesday night whilst on the ride (along with everyone else oddly), it was fun taking 3 of us to fit the wheel back in carefully - 1 to hold the hub together, 1 to hold the chain away and 1 to hold the mech - right palava.
