I have a 2008 Spesh Rockhopper with 100mm forks - in my shed i have a set of 140mm Fox shox, the OH, @Flowerpower reckons if I fit the 140's to my HT it might kill me and apparently that's not a good thing.

I wouldn't do it. At best I'd look into perhaps chocking down the travel to 120mm and settling on a compromise, for a bike designed around 100mm of travel it's a bit of an ask to whack 40mm extra up front.
