[#596307]

anything more than a few miles clipped in on the road and my feet start to ache over the cleat - so much that when I stop riding I can't walk on my left foot for a while
will footbeds/insoles alleviate this?

Shoes sound too narrow, so no. Are you using Nike perchance?

What pedals are you using?

currently Specialized BG Comps with Crank Bros Candys, but the same happens with SPDs
I don't think they're too narrow, could they be too tight? I do tend to crank them up.

Spesh aren't overly narrow, it could be pedal 'hotspots'. The Comp soles are quite soft/flexy but I'm not sure carbon soles would help. Try riding without cranking up the straps especially straps 1 and 2 (1 being the bottom strap) and see what happens.

What size shoe are you?

I always used to have problems on my road bike. I'd get sore feet and cramps along the outside of my foot.

It was because I was, effectively, tensing my feet up all the time.

On the mtb you stand up and move your weight aroudn a lot but the road bike is just the same cranking for miles.

I find now that I just need to concentrate on flexing my toes regularly and and not clenching them up when I climb.

Cleats are probably in the wrong position.

pm me if you want a bit of cleat related advice.

If your current pedals are mtb ones you will find it much better with proper road pedals and shoes. My first road ride with mtb pedals resulted in agony after 1 1/2 hours even though I ride 4 hours offroad every week. Road pedals spread the load over a larger area.

unfortunately I don't want to go to the expense of another pair of shoes and pedals

with Spesh shoes there is the option of 3 different insoles dependant on how 'flat footed' you are. Most spesh dealers have mat thing you stand on to work out which ones are best for you. When you buy the insoles you also get shims, which you can experiment with beneath your forefoot - just watch that you don't shift the problem to your kness or otherwise

thanks Joxster, not doing up straps 1&2 so tightly has worked ๐Ÿ™‚
