Going to buy a rack & panniers. I'm not sure if I will be buying a disc braked cyclocross/touring bike in future. or use it on my V-braked mtb. will a disc specific topeak dx tourist rack fit a v-braked mtb?

It should be fine, IIRC the only difference is that the rack is spaced more widely at the dropout to allow clearance for the brake calipers

an ordinary works fine with disc brakes IME - just space the bottom of the stays out a bit. the disc specific one I thought was clunky

sorry to contradict TJ above but an ordinary one doesnt always work with every brake/caliper setup,
as i found that a non disc one fouled my calipers,

the topeak disc one also works with v-brakes as thats what i'm running on mine at the mo.

The Topeka rack has long bolt boss bits which hold it off the seat stays. I had one and didn't load it to the limit they specify, but the bosses bent. I took it back and got a standard one, which worked fine on my thorn raven because the bosses were higher than usual, on seat stays rather than dropouts, specifically so a normal rack can be used. So I'd get a normal rack and hope that it works when you get a disc specific frame

I've been using a SuperTourist DX on a variety of bikes for the past 3-4 years. That would include off-road touring, carrying tent and stuff. I had to go that route as no other rack would fit past the disk caliper.

It's been a great buy and I'd not hesitate to buy another.

EDIT: When I worked in a bike shop, that was the rack we'd fit to any disc-equipped bike. I never saw any returns.

erm, now I'm more confused. I'll go for a non-disc super tourist dx then?

STOP

The SuperTourist DX I'm referring to *is* the disc one!

Bluddy Topeak naming conventions!

i'm afraid that on here something will always work for someone where it hasn't for someone else.

are you buying online? if not then why not take your bike to the shop to see fitting?
