OK so the SLX has more metal inside it, and will be therefore heavier and more expensive...

same BCD etc, why not? Different chainline?

I've got steel deore middle rings on both my SLX and XTR chainsets, both fitted perfectly. But there's more than one sort of deore ring I think, I've heard some need to be filed a little to fit. BCD and chainline are fine.
