Any recommendations for a wide/high volume toe box clipless shoe to accommodate painful arthritic big toe joint? Was wondering what Crank Brother Mallets came up like? Ta muchly.

Mallets came up disappointingly narrow for me.

Currently using 5 10 Hellcats, which were the widest shoes I could find.

My first 5 10's and I'm very happy with them.

Lake usually get the nod for wide feet. Northwave are pretty good too.

+1 for Lake wide fit.

Solved years of foot pain / problems I'd been having. Pricey but I often do 100+ miles a week on the MTB so totally worth it for me in the long run.

Rich @ Salt Dog Cycles will sort you out.

Lake MX241 wide might be your best bet. Expensive, but the front section is segmented and held with the Boa so give more chance of conforming to awkward areas.

Yeah, and when they do, they assume that the fit must be only just marginally wider than some super narrow Italian disco slipper.

They really are wide and well worth hunting down and actually trying on.

5.10 impact vxi are roomy, I stopped using mine because they were too big in the toe box for me

I find that after wearing my 5.10’s for more than a couple of hours, my big toe gets painful.

My Shimano Spd shoes are only ones that are roomy in the toe box. I would have thought if Shimano do some flat shoes (I’ve never looked for any).

Maybe try some Shimanos?

Another vote for Sidi Mega. I've had one pair for 20 years, only have to replace the insole and straps/clicky bits.
They are wider than the Lakes, I've got some of those too.
Moffat Outdoors does the Sidi Megas, cheaper than anywhere else, though I dont think he advertises it.

Most of the above still go narrow at the toe box so only wide at the bal of the foot.

Does your big toe stick out, away from your foot? Or does it bend inwards towards the next toe?

It’s the main joint between big toe and foot that’s painful. Even walking boots are proving to be a problem now. Very frustrating don’t know what I can do.

The problem is that no one in the bike industry actually makes a shoe that is foot shaped. I’m managing with a set of 5Ten Freeriders that are 1/2 a size too big and the wife with her wide hobbit feet is doing the same with a pair of Shimano SPD shoes (unsure which ones, AM something), they’re not idea but we’ve spent the last several years either barefoot, in flips flops or natural shaped shoes and our feet are returning to a much more healthy natural shape re of wearing narrow main stream shoes. I also have much less problems with cold feet than I used to.

@zerocool. That pretty much sums up me and the Mrs word for word. Natural footwear is much better for our feet but the cycling industry is painfully far behind.

This. All my shoes have about a 3cm gap between my toes and fhe end because the end is far too narrow.

If only Altra made clipless buke shoes.
