Hi.

I'll be changing my bike at the end of the year and I've narrowed my search down to:

Whyte G-170c RS 29
Whyte S-150c RS.

I've chosen these for value (in my budget) and the fact they have carbon frames.

I've booked a demo on both for the end of May but I'm also after other riders opinions on these models and what riding you do. I mainly ride local stuff in the Peak District with the occasional trail centre trip. I do about 5 enduros a year too inc Ardrock, Tweedlove and some smaller Welsh ones.

My current bike is a 2017 Nukeproof Mega 290 which is 150 travel. I weight just over 70kg with my gear on.

Would the S-150 suit or would I benefit from the extra 20mm of travel with the G-170?

Thanks

Ian

Personally, if you're not racing the EWS, then I don't see the point of a 170mm 29er. The s-150 is still mega capable, and would be right at home in the Alps, Finale, Enduro races, Tweed Valley... Etc ...

S150 all the way. Very capable bike and happy enough to pedal all-day. Though to be fair, unless you’re bothered about how you get on racing the enduros, an S120 would do the job too. My riding is similar to yours and my T130 is perfect for me.

A 170mm 29er with progressive geometry is a very big bike (I know as I own one).

My 140/130 bike probably gets used & raced 90% of the time. As above, if I didn't race EWS's, or do big riding trips abroad where I don't want to trash a smaller bike, I wouldn't own the big one.

Go with the 150.

I rode both and settled on the 150, it's a staggering bike, capable all day long.

I test rode a g-170 & t-130 this weekend, both on 27.5 wheels.

I found the g-170 was a much more fun bike to ride & pedalled incredibly well for such a big bike. The t-130 was let down IMHO by having 2.6" tyres front & rear in comparison to the 2.5" front & 2.4" rear on the g-170.

Either way I think you'll be delighted by your choice.

I must say the G170 29er has been winking at me for the last 8 months , I know its a very long bike but the reach and top tube are shorter than the previous incarnations of the G series bikes, shame I cant find a store with one in to leg over,,,

Own a Whyte S-150c RS, with both the standard 29er wheels and the optional Whyte switch 27.5 Wheelset with 2.8's.

It's a true monster on the 27.5 wheels on my local rides around Sheffield and the Peak. I've not switched back to the 29's for a while, but have ran whopping 2.6 29er tyres and conservative (fast) 2.2's.

Must admit I am tempted to try a G170 for Enduro races and get a lighter 140mm travel trail bike for the tamer riding.

I'd seriously consider a S120. I got one and hammered out a few KOM's on descents (blame it on new bike syndrome - you have to charge hard!), and also won the veterans category at the Muckmedden 6 (hour) race on a really gloopy and techy course last Sunday. I ride an XL and weigh 95kg.

Cheers for all the input. The S-150 sounds like the suiter. The 170 is a lot of travel for me.

Suppose the demo day will give me some answers. Look forward to it.
