I have a new Cove Stiffee frame

New drive train comprising:
Middleburn chainrings 24:32:44
Sram PC99 chain
Sram X9 rear cogs nine speed 11:32
Sram X9 Rear Mech
Shimano XT Front Mech

Its done around 100km I was out on Saturday and the chain broke, fortunately it was right by the power link so I could just lose a link and carry on but.

Why would it break when everything is new? am I missing something on chainline or in the setup somewhere? Front mech changing isn't the best and I am struggling to set it up without rubbing the chain against the mech in middle front cog large rear cog but having clearance in granny gear. Also the chainrings seem to sit very close to the chainstays.

I am not normally a chain breaker unless of course the chain is very worn this one broke as I was pulling off I wasn't changing gear and although accelerating I wasn't really giving it the full beans. I am only 12 stone so not exactly a powerhouse.

SRAM had a batch of PC991 chains that mysteriously snapped whilst JRA for most of my friends a few years ago...is yours old stock?

The solution was simple and is known as KMC, or if you are a bit weight-weenie, YBN Hollowpin from XC-Racer at £20.

Merlin have a good price for KMC X9SL chains ATM, very nice they are too.

just a faulty chain, buy another and don't worry about it. had one SRAM chain break (cracked outer plate), out of probably 20 or so PC951/971... so all the rest wore out before they broke. i stick with SRAM, cheap and don't rust too bad.

1 bust link doesn't have to mean anything, if it keeps unzipping then you have a bad chain.
