Seems to be loads in the classifieds / eBay at the moment.... More than I've seen before as a '5 curious' I wondering why and what people are chopping them in for? 29ers?
Maybe because they are not cheap and if your are not riding them regularly you may feel you need to get some of that money back. I have had mine for 2 years and love it to bits. Or they could be jumping on the 29 bandwaggon as you say.
sun & dry trails will be increasing interest in MTB's again, so their (along with everyone else) taking advantage in the chance of a good price?
Sold mine earlier this week as not using it enough. Sold while good residual value and put money to a new Soul ๐
There have always been plenty of Fives available and this is the time of year when people are buying new bikes and selling off their old ones.
There is also the fact that the Five is a very stable design that holds its price well. You are not going to see as many of some other models, simply because they haven't been around for very long or they have changed so much that people aren't interested in the old ones any more.
I've got a 2006 Five frame up on ebay at the moment. I suspect that a fair few frames from 2006 are in skips by now, but this still rides very well and has 7 bids and 57 watchers, with still a couple of days to go. I bought it in the Autumn to save my overly complicated Giant from the ravages of winter and always planned to sell it again in the Spring. In fact it performed so well (shrugging off even the worst of the weather) that I might have kept it, if it hadn't been for the fact that it's just too small for me.
Good reminder. I'll get mine in the ads soon.
Interestingly, I was leading an Orange demo day ride last week and with 8 riders, every single one was on a Clockwork, Gyro or Five29. Not a single Five taken out. At least half were already Five owners.
There are always lots of Fives bought and sold on here and other sites; they're well-regarded generally and often seen as a good upgrade to a serios full-susser. It's also the time of year when most bikes are sold as Roverpig said.
There are lots of attractive alternatives availabale right now which might be tempting Five owners to sell; not just 29ers but also decent carbon trail frames etc which are now appearing more regularly in the sales and classifieds, as well as more up-to-date versions of the Five and dare I say it... more efficient suspension designs than the Five's single pivot ๐
29er is no longer a bandwagon in my opinion as it's been the normal for many riders now for 4-5 years +.
Because Orange has missed the 650b boat?
Because Orange has missed the 650b boat?
I've still never seen one in the flesh. The 650b revolution certainly hasn't been televised for me yet ๐
... because people are still buying them and there are a hell of a lot of 'em around, for good reason.
Last few Lakes/Calderdale rides I've been on have been >50% Orange Fives : <50% other bikes.
I'm still tweaking and improving mine and haven't got any plans to sell it yet. Just bagged a CCDB for it.
Might be tempted by a Liteville 301 at some point but haven't seen anything else that floats my boat as a potential all-day-in-the-mountains bike at the moment.
To be honest, I've only seen a couple of 29ers out in the big hills so far and never seen a 650b in the wild at all.
I belive orange are dong a 650b arnt they? so ive heard anyway
Gary's experience is interesting. I guess if you own a Five and are on an Orange demo day then you are not going to bother testing a bike you already have, but I'm still not sure that Orange offer anything as versatile as the venerable old girl. A Five29 might steamroller technical trails a bit faster, but would you want to ride it all day? A Gyro might be a better XC bike, but Orange are keen to point out that it wont take the same amount of abuse as a Five.
Do they offer anything else that you could ride all day but still throw down a proper downhill course if it took your fancy?
Mines not for sale, sorry!
I think there just are a lot of them in circulation at the moment and they don't break too easily so they are available to sell second hand ๐

This for me, and as others have said, the design doesn't change every two minutes so a 2009/10/11/12/13 would look similar from a distance and give the impression that loads are for sale.
Also agree with those saying people fancy a go on a 29er. I've got a Five but will be demo'ing a Gyro and Five29 this year to see if I want to swap. If I do my Five will be sold.
Is there really much difference betweet the 2013 version and older versions?
I think the last couple of years which include the larger diameter seat tube for a dropper post, ISCG mounts and the tapered head tube/ maxle are all pretty similar, around 2011 onwards?
Having said that, I bought mine in 09 which has none of these, and will be keeping it for a good couple of years yet. I may add a hardtail 29er to the fleet though.
Selling my 2012 frame (in classifieds atm) as im building a Mojo HD.
Because they've realised they are made from old filing cabinets ?
I'm tempted. I'm full suss curious, having ridden hard tails only. I currently ride a mk1 Blue Big. Is the Five a comparable fs?

Mate, you was me a few months back, swapped my pig for a five and love it. ๐
My only concern is I'll miss the slack 67 head angle if I buy an older Five. I can't afford a newer one.
I got a 2010 frame, feels bang on the same as a pig.
My mate has spent the last few months on a Trance 29er. He got back on his Five this week and went out and took just about every KOM on the Lion Trail on the South Downs this afternoon. This proves nothing except he's a **** as two of them were mine.
Prudish forum. I said he's a ****t.
Bloody hell....
I love my five, but love my single speed more, it's the only reason I'm selling mine, simply not using it enough in the Mountains.
I'm one of the Orange Five sellers (a white 2007 one on ebay*). if mine is the same reason for selling than everyone else then I'll be gobsmacked.
my wife (who does not ride bikes), behind my back, has bought me a Five29er for my birthday as a total unexpected surprise. to do that she's had to do quite a bit of digging to work out which one to get etc. it made me cry like a bloody baby when she did that. lovely girl.
I've been riding a 29'er (Cube AMS) quite a bit lately and was mulling over changing the five to a newer five - but like everyone else says; they are practically the same but with the inconvenience of requiring taper forks & maxle rear wheels. Anyway, the five29 is a great reason to move forward.
I know Orange 5's get a bit of dribbing on stw forums for being like office drawers but they really are excellent bikes and feel good. I've always been a single pivot fan from the old days of Proflex and K2 so the orange 5 was always going to be a natural progression from the K2 carbon 5500c that I had yonks ago.
search for "Orange Five Frame 2007 18" (5" travel Fox Float RP23)"

Second hand NP Mega frames go for about 300 to 400 quid.
There's bound to be a lot of Five owners craving a Five 29er, and it's New Bike Time for a lot of people anyway, so not too shocking that there's some nice ones for sale.
Must be something in the air - I've just bought a 2007 five frame off ebay and waiting for delivery. I just wasn't getting anywhere near the mountains to ride my 'freeride' bike ๐
If you can pick them up cheap then it's all good really. And you can still get replacement bearings, blots, pivots, mech hangers from Orange...
It's just the start of the 26" exodus.

naah, theyre just buying Alpine 160s which is what they should have done from the start, rather than stick 160mm forks onto a five and try make it something it isnt.
I'd like to hand you over to my good friend, Mr. David Bowie:

Yep cause getting an Alpine 160 will fix the problem that running 160's and a CCDB on the 5 didn't.....same rider same perfomance
Like one of the others above I have a Five and will demo a Gyro/Five 29er.
I am also lucky to own a Clockwork 29er and do regularly compare time between my Five and the Clockwork.
Conclusion - I don't have one. What felt to be a slow downhill run yesterday on my Clockwork was actually quicker than on my Five but a recent climb saw me quicker on the Five.
Could it just be there are so many Fives about there are just more on the secondhand market?
Trying very hard not to sell mine but not sure how useful it will be when I move to chicago.
Still, it will be the last one to go if it does.
Bizarrely saw two Sub 5s yesterday around Cannock, they do seem to last very well. I think the only other older bike I spotted was an old style ~2001ish Marin full sus which is another one that seems to live forever.
Very content with my Five, 6'6", no interest in the Five 29er. If I was getting a 29er full sus frame I'd rather get something a bit lighter to offset the extra wheel weight.

naah, keep the Five with 140 and buy a Patriot with 180 AS WELL. (Not instead). ๐
Don't think I need an Alpine 160 too.
