I have a Yeti ASR-sl with 100mm Reba forks and an On One Inbred with 120mm Recons.
With the On One I seem to be able to manual no problem off smallish drops (the only sort I do). However the Yeti just seems to drive head first off everything?
Have tried fitting a shorter stem to the Yeti (from 100mm to 75mm) but doesn't seem to have made much difference.
Any ideas?
Basically you have run out of talent.
But you can build on your talent. A full sus has a longer rear end and there wheelbase (in general) than a hard tail and will sink a little when you pull up so requires more force. Yank a bit harder and learn back a bit further and you'll be there.
Ooo Err missusYank a bit harder and learn back a bit further and you'll be there.
so I cant just spend lots of money to deal with the problem?
bugger..
(why are the adverts opposite trying to sell me a Yeti 5 - its as if the can look into my very soul...)
You never yank to manual. Weight back and smoothly or you get out of balance if you are too quick. What do i know though. Weight back à LOT more than you think as well.
LOL at Dirtynap!
You liked that then.
push away with the hands and heals 🙂
never pull
🙂
cheers.
I think I'll try dropping the seat so I can get the weight back easier.
pushing away with hands and heels? how does that get the bike even off the ground? i'm confused. don't you need to pull somehow at some point?
Yep just do as Jedi says.
Personally I can’t manual at all, or wheelie, in-fact I struggle to ride a bike! But one thing I do know is believe what Jedi says! 😀
ha ha i'm not denying but i'm just confused by his words.
the push away shifts your weight back. and unweights the front end
i'm off to find some kerbs to try it on.
Thanks Jedi - my understanding is you are the man for such matters. Sounds like i need one of your training days.
glad i could help 🙂
now try it and let me know 🙂
ah ok i see what you are saying now. good stuff.
and to get even more out of your push, preload the front end and then push with hands and feet. The harder you preload the higher the wheel will go.
Dropping the seat definitely makes it easier to manual as well.
@ jedi
that's how i manual, i just never realized it, top description.
I'm mostly a wheels on the ground sort of guy and for a while I wondered what Jedi was on about with the push away advice.
Then I thought about the relative momentum and realised that pulling and leaning was never going to change anything, whereas a 95 kg bloke could easily push a 10kg bike into whatever position he liked.
Thanks, Jedi, it helped.
high 5's !
Pah
Obv understand about pushinig away with feet, but confused by the hand thing - I've always pulled on the bars and pushed with my feet - but I am rubbish - please explain someone
By pushing the bike away, it will rotate around the pivot, your body. That will lift the front end up.
If you just yank upwards on the bars you will get aching biceps the day after, and not be able to lift the front end very far. I push down/forwards on the bars, which shoots the bike forwards and then the front end naturally begins to lift itself upwards. At this point you can give a little bit of help by lifting upwards/back, but it's a lot easier this way than just yanking.
Shred and Jedi hit the nail on the head, i cant Manual for toffee, but thats how i initiate a power wheelie, as shred says the bike will pivot around your body if you push against the cranks and bars
I'd read about pushing the handlebars to raise the front wheel ages ago - but it sounded counterintuitive to me - I tried it and got nowhere!
I finally got the 'push' thing a few months ago - now I can do small jumps - yay 🙂 - and I even manage a very small double - 🙂 🙂
