[Closed] Why aren't MTB clothing weights published ?

[#956922]

I mainly buy bikes/ components on weight Vs cost factor but find it very hard to find out the weight of clothing. The popularity of weight weenies shows the importance weight is in MTBs but no clothing manuf. seems concerned with publishing weights. I train hard to keep a low BMI, going as far as keeping my hair short and legs shaven weekly, knowing my clothing isn’t adding unnecessary lbs to drag around would certainly give me a mental advantage aswell as the increased speed from shedding clothing weight.

Any thoughts?

You have to be serious about racing if you are going to win, its not just riding your bike around the woods with the weekend warriors.

you do know that the only true way is to way everything, different samples of the same product will have different weights, tolerances being what they are.

scruff's got a point. I mentioned this to the Cannock authorities a while back and they're going to print the night riding permits on lighter weight paper next month and not laminate them. It's not quite the same, but it all adds up.

Taking this seriously, for better or worse, I should think weight is a lot less important than drag, which must be mostly determined by how well the stuff fits at basic level, although the stuff done with the surface texture of TT skinsuits is rather clever I believe. 🙂

So you're better off trying stuff on than weighing it. Unless you're looking at a pair of Big Biffer Baggies, in which case do neither, pick something else. 😉

If you want people to take you seriously you can't go wearing heavy clothes. A full body wax and a thin layer of spraypaint is just as effective.

If you eat properly and eat small portions then your poo weighs less, so 'taking a dump' isnt that effective in weight loss.

I should think one of Ton's stools weighs more than some people's bikes. 😉

The reason cloting weights are not available is because nobody cares. Not even top pro XC racers. Why? Because they have to wear what their sponsors provide for them, and they are all wearing exactly the same thing anyway, more or less! (Lycra shorts, jersey, lid, gloves, race shoes.)

If it doesn't matter at that level, then it certainly doesn't matter to anyone else. 🙂

And also clothing has to do a lot more than just be light: Protection, sweat wicking etc. Imagine your super lightweight shorts splitting up your ass halfway up a lung busting climb. Err actually, no, don't! 😉

If you want to save weight, why not cut your shorts shorter, or wear a crop-top, or buy the smallest size you can, and stretch it out very tight?

Need any more suggestions? See 'Top Tips' in Viz... 😉

How about shoes?
Heavy shoes definitely feel slower than light ones.

I'm with the goose fat and body paint option, expecially for the female riders.

Only on the up-stroke. The extra weight helps to push the peadal back down again.

1 minute is a huge amount to a proper racer.

Also, can we please cease with the sexist 'naked female racer' replies, no place for this on an adult open forum.

Do you wear woolen jerseys now? If not, you can't remove them to make that difference, can you? And it won't be of any use at all unless your competitors are wearing woolen jerseys. And I'll wager they are not. 🙂

Nah, a quick Google shows he doesn't even race anyway! A very poor finish in the pairs race at D2D 2005 is all that shows up!

You have to be serious about racing if you are going to win

But don't you all just wear lycra? I can't remember the last time I saw anyone racing in full merino, baggies and waterproof.

doesn't this sum it up rather aptly ? Winning is all about "Nyeh-nyeh I'm much betterer than wot you are!". Cooperation and inclusion are more adult. Like all the serious faces passing us the other week when we were looking after a fallen rider. None of them seemed to be having much fun 🙁

Generally the fastest guys are really nice, the ones who are miserable are usually the ones in the middle who have dillusions of grandeur!

the people who care, are the people who don't wear baggies over their lycra.

What about people who do not F****** wear lycra under their baggies. You know normal people who ride in tight boxer/pant under the baggie.

The ones that suffer from chafing and having nasty sweat laden cotton rubbing against their bits all ride?

Never really worried too much about clothing weight (probably should do I suppose), but there are definitely significant differences in the weight of helmets and shoes compared to the sort of weight people are trying to save on bikes - I'm afraid I'm also a bit of a weenie with those!

You do know that we are know in the 21st century, therefore you don't have to wear your granddad pants...

I don't wear Grandad pants, I wear ycra cos it's the best material out there for riding a bike in. Sometimes I wear baggies over it, sometimes just the lycra.
You try doing a 24hr race in unpadded shorts or (even worse) pants under lycra then get back to me on issues of comfort...

A lot of manufs do post weights. Mostly though it's climbing companies who make stuff that'll get packed in a bag for some Alpine climb where people don't want to drag any excess weight up hills.

I have a mate who knows the weights of various of his clothes because the rules for Polaris challenges state that you have to have a waterproof and waterproof trousers - but you don't often wear them, so they sit in your backpack weighing your shoulders down. If you are doing a Polaris having a 6-7lb pack makes the whole weekend very much easier than carting around 25lbs of general outdoor gear.
