[#6656371]

I need a tyre upgrade as currently I am using the mountain king 2.2 (non black chilli) versions and I keep slipping on wet rocks 🙂

I don't see that much mud on my trips as its mostly wet rock and hardcore.

looking round the nobby nics seem like the tyre for me but I would like the lightweight versions and I can't seem to be sure I am buying the right tyre.

I'm thinking I need the folding dual compound and perhaps 2.25 on the front and 2.1 on the rear??

What I don't want to do is buy another bad version of a tyre like the mountain king 2.2!

thanks
christian

Would I be best with the EVO compound 2.1's all round?

Performance - cheapo, hard rubber versions. Evo - the better ones

Pacestar - harder, faster rolling rubber, Trailstar more grippy rubber, Gatestar - specifically for 4x

Double defence - bit of puncture protection, Snakeskin - tougher agian.

Tubeless Ready are fairly new ones, Tubeless Easy are the 2015 ones.

thanks for your help. So do you think it would be an upgrade to go from mountain king 2.2 (non black chilli) to NN Evo 2.1 and would they fit on my Carrera banshee rims?

If it's the pacestar compound, it won't be any improvement on wet roots/rocks, trailstar is much better for that.

Should fir the rims fine, a trailstar front, pacestar rear combo woul dbe an upgrade.

70EUR here for 2 of the new 2015 models, in "Liteskin", which is new, sort of a lightweight version of Snakeskin above. 2015 ones are supposed to be a significantly better tyre.

No improvement over my indian mountain kings?

I can't see narrow trailstars? I don't weigh much so I think 2.1 or 2.2 would be plenty

Double defence - bit of puncture protection, Snakeskin - tougher agian.

Other way round - DD is tougher than Snakeskin.

If you can handle the cost, I don't think there's a better tyre for wet rock grip with decent rolling resistance than the black chili Trail King. Much stickier than Schwalbe Trailstar.

So it is, I stand corrected. And a fair chunk heavier too.

tbh on-one smogs are cheaper and better performing than all of the above anyway.

Monster of a tyre. Astonishing grip.

My experience with nobby nics with vaguely rocky riding was a rear tyre that lasted 2 rides before the sidewall was shredded 🙁
They were the lighter, non-snakeskin version

Wet rocks are slippery. Let some pressure out before buying new tyres.

How much d'you weigh?

On 2.2 MKs, I'd be no higher than 30 and probably more like 20 front and 25 rear, I'm 68kg.

You know, wet rocks are slippy regardless of the tyre you're using, try to minimise your time on them (stright line them where you can), try not to traverse angled faces, spot the exit, and no braking on them.

Cheaper than the £60-80 that a couple of decent new tyres ...

On a bike like that the last thing I'd want is lighter tyres than your Mountain Kings! For riding rocks you want a stiff tough carcass and big volume - so 700g+ per tyre. I'm running 22/26psi tubeless on my Trail Kings at 12 stone odd on a 6" full sus - no pinch flats yet... A mate was riding the same rocky trails at similar pace on similar size Geax Gomas with DH tubes and was still getting pinch flats at 40psi+. Tellingly even at 35 psi the thumb squeeze test felt softer than my tyres did at 10psi less - flimsy carcass!

The non-black chili Continentals are horribly slippery on wet rocks and roots.

So Chief groove guru would you not say that the nobby nics in pacestar rubber would not be an upgrade from my death traps?

I only weigh 62KG so I don't think I will be straining the tyres too much also hence why I would like my heavy beast to be a bit lighter to match.

These will roll at least as fast as your current tyres and have tons more grip:

http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/trail-king-protection-26-x-2,2-folding-107835/varid-124206?currency=3&delivery_country=190&gclid=CN79-v-uk8ICFSX4wgodDQIApA

The NNs will roll faster still but won't grip half as well, will puncture much more easily and the tread will wear much faster so you'll have to replace them more often.

What's the panaracer XC fire pro like?

I understand the trail kings are probably my best bet but they are a little steep and possibly heavy

XC pro would be no better than your mountain kings.

Try with less pressure first, trust me, it'll make a hell of a difference, at 62kg you've got way too much air in them
