That is a cracking pic of the Devils' Staircase. Taken from The big herdsman of the glen.

๐Ÿ˜ฏ Wouldn't have thought it possible!? (Never ridden it, mind, just going on what mere mortals have reported)

Having not ridden the complete route before (including the infamous east shores of Loch Lomond) Iโ€™ll be playing things by ear!

So he's planned a faster time (one way) than I'm aware of anyone ever managing, then to do it again immediately, having only ridden one half of the trail? I guess thats the mentality of pro-24hr athletes, good luck to him! 8)

Hi All.Sorry for the late news and I appreciate your concern. After 28 hours of riding and literally one more hill to go, frustratingly I had to call an end to the ride. This was because of logistical and practical issues combined with horrendous weather

Bummer, I'm sure Rich will be back to conqueror it.

Wow, 28 hours is some going, I retract my previous somewhat pessimistic comment!

My mate's doing the photography for that, for Privateer Magazine. His last Facebook update seemed to be saying it was taking somewhat longer than planned... What a mentalist, but hats off nonetheless!

You've had a pop at it though haven't you? Do you really think the double will go in 24 hours?

I reckon the (big) push on Loch Lomondside is what, 1.5 hours one way, so to do the double you have to assume three hours to push a total of about 8 miles, which leaves you with 184 miles still to ride, in 21 hours, and not all of that is rideable either.

I guess these guys know their business, but I think it would take an epic ride and a lot of luck to break it.

Rode the FW-KLL section on Saturday during the Tour de Ben Nevis - had forgotten how tough even the "easy" bits were. Mad props to keep at it for 28 hours.

Double knocked off at end of August, not sure on time:

Fastest time for a single that I've heard of was 11:29.

...doing the maths it looks like he did it in 41-ish hours? (started 7am on the Saturday, finished 00:50am the monday) Sounds like two big days but with a sleep in the middle, fair play!

unfortunately he pulled out with practically 1 hill to go, it made sense with what i know from talking to him about it.
I could of joined him this year but work commitments took hold, although we're planning on doing it next year together. 24 hrs possible, we hope so but anything under 28 would be amazing i think

This has to be the ultimate point to back and back attempt in the UK.
The amount of quality riders who have tried and failed is quite amazing.

I've never ridden it at all and no plans to visit Scotland soon. I would love to attempt it though, but it isn't on the plans for the next 2-3 years.

I reckon 28hrs is do-able in good weather. I would be staggered to see someone do it in 24 hours, but the South Downs Double times have been slashed in recent years.

tbh I'd have recommended June rather than late September...

I dont think it'll happen - not a there and back in 24 hrs. What might be doable is a start at Crianlarich, go to Milngavie and back then Fort bill and back. But not Milngavie to FW and back.

^ I agree with SBZ - It is an amazing ride, but seems more tech than some of the other long distance routes, throw in the weather / midges / etc and you have a real gnarl-fest. It is not a route you can relax on an churn out some miles.

Forgot to say, fair play to the latest attemptee...

Massive respect but no danger of this one falling inside 24.

I know there's logistics to be considered but I'd have picked midsummer,a longer weather window and gone NSN

Not sure I get this, after all the same ground is covered. Surely it don't matter where you start, unless you are planning for a sllep and/or meals somewhere.

Great to see Rich have a gutsy attempt at the whwx2, I don't know about a sub 24 hour time for this having done it, maybe 28 hours as shaggy and aiden say. I saw my completion of the whwx2 as just to be the first in any time, riding time was just under 35 hours, total time 40 hrs 50 mins. Not bad for a 49 year old. You go to a strange place on this challenge and it takes a lot to recover, good luck to anyone trying it. See more at www.w90joe.blogspot.com
