Looking to do my first sportive very soon. I know that 2 water bottles is not enough so does anyone use a bladder or rely on refreshment areas.

Mine is sitting at home doing nothing so thought it would be a good idea to use for water and tools and food.

A tiny minority do. Everyone else just fills up at the feed stations - one of the (few) advantages of a sportive over just going for a ride is easy availability of water at known points.

How many tools do you need, chain tool and tyre levers?

No chance. Bags are horrible enough on the mtb, torture on the road bike.

This, do you normal road loop with a full camelbak and marvel at how much more your back and shoulders hurt, and how quickly you get knackered.
