+1 in support of Southern Yeti and flip - I've been having similar thoughts myself. Like, flip, I've got a boy who loves ragging the BMX tracks [on his Rothan]. I was deprived of a BMX in my youth by parents who thought I should ride a 'proper bike'.

I 'try' and ride the ramps at local skate parks more for fun than super serious. My son also has an MPG scooter he takes, seems a lot of the kids now ride these instead.

I live in Cannock and we have no proper skate park so we go to Landywood, Rugeley or Fradley which aren't far.

I have found even though the kids look intimidating most are really nice, they've given my son no end of help.

Agreed. They're just into what they're doing. Happy to talk, demo moves to my boy, even let me have a blast on their bikes.

Sefton:

Again - agreed - getting to the track would feel a bit of numpty. Would have to stick BMX in the back of the car to get there. Then should look no more daft or punter-ish then than 95% percent of the people in MTB trail centre car parks ๐Ÿ˜‰

Even at 22 I feel a bit awkward going to a skatepark full of kids. Just have to remember that everyones there to do the same thing have fun I suppose. When we used to bmx as teens there were probably more older guys than people our age anyway.

Lol, yes and probably way too old,I didn't have one as akid but when I was about 8 my mate used to give me a backy from school on a

Raleigh Commando

Always wanted one but I couldnt afford one, now I'm older I can afford nearly any bike I want but I don't have all the time I did have....so I bought one of these anyway:

All the gear and no idea for sure, but i love it - regret not having a Commando, no regrets about buying the Blend, Life is short

I love my bmx. I'm 38 now and agree it makes you a better rider. You don't rely on your big wheels or suspension so much to get you out of trouble.

It can be a little intimidating riding skateparks and stuff with so many good pre-teen riders about but hey, if they give you any lip, just tell their Mums ๐Ÿ˜€

My bmx is my absolute weapon of choice for pump tracks where its dead easy to manual and hop stuff. Great fun. Bikes are just bikes, don't get caught up in perceived age limits..

Hey Rorschach you been up there or did you google that?..guy riding was great he used the BMX track to warm up for crit racing on our road circuit ๐Ÿ˜€ we get a lot of 4X and MTBers riding at Rhyl great to practice jumping and pumping...most of the older guys use a cruiser to start with as they seem a little more stable

Marsh Tracks quiet at night so no need for you to be worried about the kids...average age of riders some nights must be 35!...feels great riding under floodlights too!

i've been riding a couple of bmx tracks lately. Weather has meant superb conditions. I try and get out during the week for a few short bmx blasts.
I've learnt to bunnyhop too ( well.. a few inches ) Boy did i ache the next day. ๐Ÿ™‚

I do a little bit of BMX racing. Mainly in the 40-44 Cruiser (24" wheels) class, but recently started racing in the Vets (40+) 20" class.

Racing is a great introduction/re-introduction to BMX and will probably provide more skills that are transferrable to mountain biking that BMX street/park (e.g. pumping, cornering, jumping, manualling).

You don't necessarily need to buy a BMX straight away. Ride some tracks on your MTB (though it will feel a lot slower with the fat tyres and suspension).

As for the age thing, it's just a number. In the South BMX Region, the 30+ classes have the most amount of riders, plenty of comp for riders of all levels and everyone gets a final at the end of the day be it an A, B, C or D final.

Indeed, well said Mike, I've finished behind you a couple of times at Gosport!

Forget about the age / kids bike nonsense. What you'll find at a race is a load of friendly people your age who love riding bikes and racing. Hell most of them ride MTB's too. I've really enjoyed racing at Gosport this year and will be back in 2012 for sure. Hopefully making it into a few more 'A' finals now I'm getting used to it!

Incidentally Mike what colour are the current MX24R frames, I'm going to need a new bike very soon....

Earlier in the year I had a go on a bmx. Tried to bunnyhop it and nearly went over the bars ๐Ÿ˜†

As with yeti I spent my yoof on a skateboard so decided to go for a 24" dj bike to start with. At 6'3 riding a bmx feels a bit silly. I am still tempted to get one though, as I'm sure it would improve my riding.

I've been to Gosport a few times, great track.

Flip,
nice new concrete bowls now in Stafford (Victora Park.)

If there was a decent track round here Id get a 24incher. Got some dirt jumps by me but they are up to 11 on the Sickometer.

I'm 33, started riding bmx about 3 years ago... I stick to track and the odd bit of trails. Don't bother with 'street' or any of that stuff. Quite fancy learning to ride a bit of park though.

Without doubt riding bmx increase my mtb skills with learning to hop, manual, pickup manuals, boost, scrub etc.

Southern Yeti - I think the closest good tracks to you are Redditch, Nuneaton and Perry Park (Birmingham).

Hummerlicious - current Cruiser colours are metallic bronze and translucent red.

Crackhead - you must know the original Bradford Bull, Billy Fieldhouse. Legend has it he is 58 years old now (personally I don't believe it, cos he rides like a man 20 years younger).

I've been riding BMX since about 14 [now 25]. It has definitely improved my pumping.

Certainly a lot of dirt jumping technique is transferable. Also I like to think I'm better at ejecting myself from the bike in crashes because of BMX.

My advice is find your local set of jumps, dig a bit, ride a lot and most importantly have fun!

Purchased a Haro 300.3 back in June.... but broke my arm in July, and haven't been back on it yet.

Took a family friend to some BMX racing... and thought "This looks fun"... so I'm probably going to be visiting Prestons indoor skatepark and local BMX tracks very soon!

Anyone in the northwest interested in visiting a bmx race track?

"STW does BMX" LOL

I used to ride and dig trails for a few years. BMX definitely teaches you stuff. I'm generally a bit more relaxed in the air and better at crashing than my non-BMX mates . However, when I got back into MTBs it took a while to get used to the bumps and the slightly out of control feel, having been used to perfectly groomed jumps. I'm still generally better at jumps and berms rather than flat out gnar.

Never got into street or park, possibly cos I'm shite at it, I suspect a lot of mtbers might be the same.

If i had a race track or decent bowl on my doorstep I'd definitely have a BMX again, you can't match the pump and acceleration of a BMX on a mountain bike. Though A-line came close ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyone who thinks BMX is just for kids should try it. You'll soon change your mind. And have a whole lot of fun. ๐Ÿ˜€

I'd no ridden in best park of a year! New park as well, I was shit, but I had fun.

Best trick: 360 out of a bowl
Worst fail. Feeble grind.

I need to crash a few times to remove the fear.

Jedi, if you (or anyone on here) ever fancy a trip along the south coast let me know, I'm always up to meet new people. Did Kings park in B'mouth today, it's a pretty nice concrete place, Slades farm was a little too busy by the time so I just a had me lunch. Weymouth is nice too, need to try the Trick factory it's just a bit of a drive.

I'm so out of the loop I didn't even know it existed. Google images look ace. I love wooden ramps, can't beat them. I used to ride a at the Oxford wheel project ramps the midi was so nice, grippy but nice and fast to grind.

I used to ride a bit back in the 80s when I was quite a bit smaller than I am now..

nothing rad.. 180 bunnyhops, endo tailwhips, front wheel manuals..kind of flatland and trialsy inspired tricks mostly..

anyway.. my point is this..

I was small back then.. the few times I've gotten on a bmx as an adult I have felt way too big, off balance and too unsupple to ride with any skill or confidence..
I'd love to ride that sort of style again cos it feels great to master a new trick and it's gotta be ace for core strength and all round bike fitness.. but bmx is too small for me..

can anyone recommend a good compromise some where between a 26" mtb and a bmx..?

24" bmx perhaps..? maybe some sort of trials bike..?
