Just had an update on Whitelee Forest from the access project officer. Whitelee forest is where the windfarm is to the south of Glasgow. There was talk of improved access at the start of the windfarm project now it's actually happening I'm pretty excited.
Anyway here's the latest info.
The windfarm and visitor centre will have its public opening on Sept 22nd. This will allow access to the ~90km of windfarm and forest roads throughout the forest and moor. In addition to the main visitor centre entrance, access will be possible from entrances such as Ardochrig in the east, Carrot to the north, Alderstocks in the southeast and Hareshawmuir from the west. All of these entrances will be upgraded in due course, many over the coming winter, and over the next 1-2 years a number of further entrances will also be developed. These include Myres Hill and Overmuir (the Weavers Trail), Craigendunton Reservoir, Dunwan Dam as well as a number of smaller entrances. Eventually there will be at least a dozen entrances into the Whitelee network, all signposted and with car parking at roughly half of these.
The construction of additional routes and tracks, car parks, improved signage etc will start this winter and should result in many improvements before spring 2010.
A new website will be going live shortly: www.whitelee.com. Detailed maps of the windfarm will be located at entrances and elsewhere throughout the windfarm.
Two of the entrances are only 6 miles from home, Craigendunton Reservoir and Hareshawmuir along quiet country roads and I will be able to use the forest for a longer commute home.
Here's a pic of Craigendunton Reservoir when I was up there earlier this year.
