A friend of mine has suggested a trip to Canada biking and I'd like some idea of the best package to get, bike hire, etc.

Whistler is brilliant, I went a few years back with a couple of mates and was amazed by the terrain. If you're feeing really brave you can try some of the trails in Pemberton and Squamish as made by the locals, the kind of stuff you see in the vids. Suffice to say we didn't try 90% of that stuff but the bike park at Whistler has something for all abilities.

As for package we looked at bearbackbiking who does a full package with transfers and everything but we sorted it all separately. Flew to Vancouver, rent a car and drive up to Whistler (about 2 hours). Had an apartment up at the top of the village through holidaywhistler.com was about £350 each for 9 nights (this was in 2006 though). Bike rental we got from summitsport.com which was about CDN$400 for 7 days for the DH bikes.

There's loads of rental shops around and they all seem to be pretty good. from what I understand it's busier in the Summer than it is in Winter so it works for them to have good bikes on offer. Just make sure you get the excess insurance for the bike rental to cover breakages as we definitely took full advantage of that!!

Check out www.ticket2ridebc.com

If you're going for the first time it's better to go on an organised package as they can tailor the days to suit the style of riding you want to do. Going on your own you tend to just hit the park everyday and that's less than 30% of the tails available in the region.

Def cheaper to take your own bike, only cost £20 each way with Canadian Affair last year and that's cheaper than 1 days rental. We took AM & DH bikes last year to mix it up a bit.

Flights are expensive these days, but if you're not tied down on specific dates check out the fixed date return special offers on Canadian Affair, I got a return for £289 2 year ago when I was flexible.

As Crankbreaker mentioned, Def worth a trip to Pemberton and Squamish, trails are so different to Whistler even though they are within 1 hr of each other.

Done both XC and DH shuttle days there and would recomend either.

Also worth paying extra for is a trip to the top of the mountain for the 'Top of the World' trail. We did it on the AM bikes and then dropped into some other Off Piste trails (Khyber pass ..) and then did it on the DH bikes to drop back into the bike park, (or ride dont slide if you fancy 😉

Don't forget insurance too with adequate cover for Mtb cycling. Before a doctor or nurse will even see you, you'll have to pay $250+ as soon as you walk into the medical centre/hospital!

Drop us a line if you have any questions for a Whistler based holiday!.

As crankbreaker said, we do half board accommodation packages that include transfers, accommodation, breakfast and evening meals and most importantly, guiding to make sure you get the most out of your trip based on your ability, aspirations and expectations.

Regards
