I have a old basic set of Shimano SPD pedals which are starting to show some play and an old cheapish pair of Specialized trail shoes which give my right foot pins and needles after a few hours.

After riding on flats for a couple of months i think it is time to go back to SPD's. What would a good combination be? The pedals would be mostly for trail. The shoes would be for trail and on my commuter bike.

Thanks.

Shimano M520 pedals - Dirt cheap, last a good amount of time, not overly heavy.
Which ever shoes that fit, I like Specialized but only because I have wide feet and they seem to fit the best.

After switching to Time pedals I've got a pair of M520s you can have for a tenner if you want. Nothing wrong with them. E-mail in profile if you're interested.

Do the pedals with cages make any difference ?

I inherited a pair of time z freeride pedals with my bike and i love them - big, chunky, totally bombproof and not as hard to clip out of as people say. Use cheapy Specialized shoes as well.
