Any advice on what's a good trainer - one that might be quiet enough to use in the house when the bairns are in bed? If that's impossible then what's a good one regardless of decibels?

Thats what I've got and its very quiet (compared to other turbo trainers) you can still talk normally whilst using it, and dont have to turn the TV up.
The only downside is that sprinting out of the saddle isnt really possible as the rear wheel isnt fixed in position. Other than that its very good value for money.
cheers. Anyone know which ones have fixed rear wheel - sounds like it's better that way?
This months cycling plus has a review of rollers and turbos. Not read it yet so can't help on what the recommend but worth a look.
Just ask yourself how much time you want to spend out of the saddle on a turbo trainer though, it wont be much, or at least many of the work outs I have ever done have never needed it. Its a small quibble for what is a very good value for money, quiet turbo.
Where are you located ? I have a fluid trainer in storage in Sheffield which I purchased when I broke my collarbone which would be keen to sell. Will have to dig it out and check brand etc but used it for 2 months, in an apartment and was fairly quiet, putting a trainer specific tyre on it helped as well (I still have that about somewheres along with a riser block)
Heavy enough flywheel to mimic the real thing (as much as possible at least).
Let me know if you are near enough to collect (they weigh a tonne) and will dig out specs.

I miss not being able to get out of the saddle, though.
To answer the OP: I've got a fluid trainer, with the door closed it's not going to wake anyone up, assuming a) slick tyre, and b) it's not in the room directly above the bedroom. You can certainly watch TV at a reasonable volume with it on.
But, and going back the quote above, I'd personally recommend a spinning bike - they're (a bit) quieter, you get a whole load more hand positions, and best of all you can out of the saddle to do sprint intervals. Ideal with a Sufferfest video...

It's not the noise of the trainer that annoys my neighbours, it's The Datsuns or something at number 11, the only way to make it bearable !
Another vote for the elite crono fluid elastogel.... I use mine with an Schwalbe Kojak and it's quieter than an average microwave (closest analogy that I can find).
I live in a flat, so I needed the quietest one I could find.
