Normally, I'd use a box covered in parcel tape and padded out with bits of foam. However, and this will make you laugh, two boxed bikes don't fit in our little car (actually, one doesn't fit in our car). We can get two bikes in there for a ride though so I assume padded bags would be the way forward. Any advice on which ones will give us the best chance of getting a bike that works at the other end?
The wife so far has found these: -

but I thought it best to consult the oracle of STW first!
decathlon do one now £35 del 😉 looks the same as the above.
all my years in the trade the best one ive seen is the evoc one.....£250ish but takes a road bike or dh bike.and more importantly very light! http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/core-bike-2010-evoc-luggage-24810
I saw those £250 ones. They do look nice but for that sort of money, I'd be tempted to buy the seat next to me for the bike!
A friend of mine has got the CRC branded bag & it's the same as the Brand X one on the CRC website, which is what I've got.
For some reason, it was cheaper than the CRC one at the time, but now it's more expensive...
Anyway - they're both pretty good (seeing as they're the same) & seem to be lasting well.
EDIT - thing is that unless you line the bag with a cut down bike box, they are a pig to handle as they are too floppy, so if you do that, they might not fit into the car.......although saying that my friend with the CRC bag has never lined it with a box & she manages fine with it.
cheers. Lining the bag with a big piece of card might work. The boxes we can't get in the car are the ones where the rear wheel is still in place. Even with card in the bag, the bag should fit as it has both wheels removed. Maybe I just need to find a smaller but wider box!
I've got a crc bag very good no dings bit floppy at times but not the end of the world, it has got wheels. Never lined it. Could be persuaded to sell.
I've got he CRC one and it's spot-on... As Stumpy says, it can be a bit floppy, but apart form that, it's great. both wheels off, can be a squeeze for a longer wheelbase bike (DH?) but my Orange Crush with Pikes (wound down) fits like a glove. Only addition I use is padded envelope/bubble-wrap in the corners to protect the bike.
good luck! 😉
Planet x one for me. Used it for about 2 or 3 trips per year for the last 6 yrs. It's still going strong apart and that, and good old pipe insulation, has kept my bikes safe and sound.
No wheels on it but it's never really bothered me.
I have a Creak 2 Peak wheelie Bike Bag, paid about £75 a few years back, packed out with a stout cardboard box it has been fine for 3 trips abroad. It is a little on the small size but takes my 16” Kona with ease.

cheers guys. I might have an old TeePee one in the loft somewhere but I'll give that to nthe OH and get myself a new one. Glad to hear these bikes have been safe in bags. Always been a bit paranoid in the past and gone for boxes.
looking to squeeze in a turner 6 pack (medium) with Van 36s on the front. Is hat likely to fit?
CRC logo bag it the one I have. This is the second bike bag I have used, the wheels on the CRC definite advatage. Also the numerous pockets for saddles, pedals and bits and pieces> Mine came with a tool roll as well...bonus.

Fits my medium bullit with van 36's so should be fine
Thanks guys, you've been really helpful. Looks like I'll be ordering the CRC bag.
