[#1634385]

I'm after a new set of wheels having knackered the rear hub on my Mavic Crossrides.

Looking at getting Mavic rims on Hope pro II hubs, not sure whether to go for 321 rims or pay more for 717, I know that the 321 rim is heavier and described as a freeride/ downhill rim, but I normally ride with 2.35 widh tyres and am not the lighest of riders.

Have also heard that although they are lighter more XC rims, the 717 doesn't really accept the larger tyres, causing 2.35 tyres to become more rounded in profile due to the rim width.

Any thoughts before I splash the cash?

Yes 719, wider than 717 lighter than 321.

Will happily take a 2.35.

521 is also lighter than a 321, and Mavic rate it for a tyre up to 2.5, whereas the 717 is supposed to have nothing bigger than a 2.1 on it.

A 719 is lighter still, and rated for 2.3, but of course it's also pricier.

apologies if I'm telling you something that you already know but the last 2 digits are the rim width, the first digit is the model (3 is like deore LX yaddayadda 8) )

Tyres vary massively in width profile even between manufacturers so I wouldn't worry too much about the profile, if you run at a lower pressure then it'll get squished anyway

I asked a similar question recently but it was quiet at the time so some advice now would be much appreciated.

I'm 12 stone and ride a 5" full suss. I ride mostly natural trails with small rock gardens and roots and I only do small jumps and drops. I like to ride fast but I wouldn't say that I'm particularly hard on the bike and I don't get many pinch flats.

So I'm wondering if I can get away with something like a 317 or should I go for something stronger like a 719?

Cheers.

my 717's have been excellent. I've been running 2.25 and 2.35 tyres. I only managed to bend one slightly with a sketchy 2.5 foot drop to flat on the hardtail (I'm 85kg) and even then it was all fixable. 719's sound pretty much ideal though

I have 317's on both my Summer Season & Hemlock. Both have 2.35 tyres and have taken years of stick without bending. Cheap, light & strong enough.. I'm 12 stone.

Mavic 729's here after ruining 717's and DT Swiss 5.1's (d'hing, badly) and getting many many pinch punctures on the 717's.

Not had any since the change to the 729's or been able to ruin them despite trying my very hardest.

Ok thanks. I think I might get away with 317's and the weight saving would be nice.
