Having a bit of a clearout of stuff to save up for some new wheels. I have some Hope Pro 2 with XC717 and was going to upgrade to something lighter but was stuck on which to buy! Not looking to spend anymore than £500 so what would you suggest, looked at XTR, Mavic Crossmax, Cobalt etc

Help please

factory wheelsets will always be heavier everything you listed is probably >1500g and not far off what you have now

what do you weigh? sub 75kg you could go for stans podium mmx rims (280g) with DT rev spokes

>75kg stans Alpine (330g)

>100kg stans arch/flow

hubs - do you need 20mm/15mm/qr? - tune hubs are light, not much to go wrong with a front hub - 110g for a 15mm Kong, 150g for a 20mm Kong MK

leaves you about 200 quid for a rear hub

a used king? another hope? tune if your light and not a gear masher?

£500 will get a 1200g to 1350g wheelset easily

Hi,

Hubs - Hope or DT Swiss 240S. Hopes are slightly heavier but cheaper and much easier to swap between axle standards
Double butted spokes and brass nipples.
Rims - Arch EX or Crest depending on duty

I like the Stans rims as they are very wide for their weight / strength and so if you are running wider tyres they sit well and don't roll round. I use mine with tubes but you have the option of the tubeless too.

to give you some actual weights to compare to your existing wheels
my newly built wheels to go with that nice fork you sold me last month are

DT Swiss 240S oversize 15mm front, std 240S q/r rear, both 32 holes
ACI alpina ( 2.0/1.7/2.0 ) so similar to DT Comp ( 2.0/1.8/2.0) spokes
brass nipples
Stans Crest rims
weights are 703g / 804g = 1507g

If you went to Arch EX the weights would be be 53g per wheel more

Hope this helps

circus monkey hubs laced with dt revs alu nips and crests uber light and easy to deal with price tag the crcus monkey hubs are great built a pair up into a stans arch 29ers with revs for my niner and they took a stick on 3 rides i took them apart and the innards where clean as a whistle the only thing with the hubs is when new you have to take the bearing seals off and put some descent grease in as they are a little dry

quite a few options to ponder over on the JRA website

stans hubs with stans rims for around £400
American Classic hubs with stans rims for £500

I got some Superleggera Ti hubs, cx ray sapims spokes, stans Alpine rims for £400, not sure of weight but around 1400gms

Hope Hoops Pro 2 SP's with Crests come in at 1572g and £300 - tbh found it very difficult to spend twice (or more) as much for so little gain - so I bought two sets 🙂

@mtbmarkymark: You seem like the person to ask after your post! Have you an idea on the weight of my wheels? please!

I've recently upgraded from Mavic Crossrides to Hope Pro 2 Evo's (both QR for now), laced with DT competition spokes to Stan's Arch EX (bloody great rims). I'm hoping that you'll help!

Sorry for the shameless question OP 😳

Thanks in advance.

Do like my Roval Traverses... Not massively light, but surprisingly tough. £360, they are, for what's basically a pair of DT240 hubs, some Stans ripoff rims with added eyelets, and a load of posh DT spokes. Albeit connected together with damn silly alu nipples.
