[Closed] Which Hope BB to replace a Trek PF89.5?

[#9432664]

I've managed to dodge having to learn about press-fit until now, so am trying to play catch up.

I *think* the Hope PF41 will do the job, it's certainly suitable for BB89.5 but I'm just wondering what the difference between BB89.5 and PF89.5 is.

Have a query in with Trek but just wondered if anyone here had made the swap.

Cheers

some Treks with BB90 (same as BB89.5) just press the bearings directly into the frame, a la BB30.

if this is the case then a PF41 won't work. BB90 bearings are the same size as the Hope's BSA BB bearings, so are 37mm outside diameter.

Can you have a look at the frame they are going in?

If it's bearings straight into the frame then just buy some BB90 bearings off ebay (or buy some Hopes from anywhere).

If there's a placky housing around the bearings then maybe a PF41 is the way forward (Hope, Shimano etc.)

Just be careful as Trek had an issue where the frame moulds around the bb bearings got bigger over time so they do a version 2 be bearing which is slightly larger to cope with the issue. Not that Trek think this is a bodge to a problem, oh no.

Basically if you can pull out or fit the bearing with your fingers you'll need the version 2 bearing.

Not that I've had issues with my superfly due to this......

Thanks gents, definitely a press fit BB as there is a plastic sleeve poking out that the bearings are sat inside.

Trek responded pretty quickly to my query and confirmed the PF41 should fit so I'll take the plunge.

Cheers

Don’t forget you will need the Hope tool to fit too, basically a press kit and a ~26mm hex tool to bolt both sides of the B.B. together in the frame

Thanks, I'll almost certainly be taking it to the LBS, assuming they have the tool that is...

They are not all that difficult to fit, I have fitted one to my Pivot mountain bike and one to my Giant road bike. Read the instructions, watch the video on the site, take your time and you'll be right.

The fitting tool comes in handy should you need to replace the bearings down the line.

Hmm... you've got a point actually, at £40 for the tool vs. probably £20 fitting I could justify it on the basis that I might end up buying a new road bike with a pressfit BB also (at least, that's one of the few things that's been putting me off buying a Rose recently...)
