Hello,

I am helping my Dad to buy a GPS for use mainly on the bike (on and off road) but probably for the occasional walk too. It also seems to make sense to have something you can handlebar mount otherwise the faff means you might not bother using it until you have already gone the wrong way.

I am drawn to the idea of one with a map as this seems to be the whole solution - albeit at a cost! Do those who have had with and without map rate the map or is it too small to be of use.

Of the with map sort I have spotted Garmin 800, SatMap Active and Bryton something. Are there others and which is best?

Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like what I use my Dakota 20 for.

Dakota 20 with a 1:50000 map pack would be a good call and under 300 quid (snow+rock)

FWIW, I fitted the bracket to my Garmin onto the toptube. Its a far safer place to put a GPS than on the bars.

Mine is surviving on the bars but it's worth putting a wee lanyard through the loop at the bottom as a safety measure.

Are there reasons why I should go for the Dakota 20 from Snow and Rock at £280 with 1:50k mapping:

Rather than the Garmin 800 with OS 1:50k mapping from Evans at £300 (apart from the £20 saving 😉 )

An are there any other ways of getting mapping onto these units? Nice as OS is I think Open Cyclemap is pretty good, is that an option or are you fixed to a Garmin method?

Edit - Ah this video seems to answer that question, yes it can be done:

But in this case I suppose how much of a saving buying without the OS maps is, if it costs more to add them afterwards then it would make sense to get them initially.

Open cyclemap is a good idea but the truth is that it's full of errors and omissions. In addition, it's just not up to the job for "proper", navigating in the way that an OS map is. Installing OSM is still an option, even if you buy the OS mapping. Yo can even install custom maps (I did a scan of the Glentress Trail map and managed to load that).

At the end of the day, much of the function is the same (it's a GPS, it gives you co-ordinates, most now have some sort of mapping). They are all targetted at slightly different users though and the Dakota is certainly a "recreational" GPS rather than the Edge "bike computer" GPS.

Also worth bearing in mind is that the Dakota runs of AA batteries. That makes multi-day trips away from external power supplies a much simpler affair.

I'm trying to remember where you are in the event you wanted a wee play with mine 😉

I use TT for my Dakota maps ~ talkytoaster.

A tip if you get one and for any one with a Dakota 10/20, for longer battery life, turn off the screen, so you have to press it to get it on (you can select how long it stays on for) and the runtime on a pair of AA's can be 5-10+ times longer than the standard 15-20hrs.

Thanks for the advice, a couple of points druidh made hit a chord and so I have ordered a Dakota 20. The blurb says it doesn't come with a handlebar mount so is this the right one?

It says Oregon but also is referenced in the Dakota description. If not can someone post a link for the correct one.

Thanks.

Garmin part number: 010-11023-00

I bought one of these too - for fitting to a rucksack shoulder strap.

Try ebay for these bits - you can save quite a bit (especially if you aren't in a hurry)
