What do people use? - Online or offline?

Swayed towards the offline Garmin Training Centre software for my Edge 500 Christmas pressie.

Is there any advantage / additional functionality with Garmin Connect

The support for GTC is pretty poor as Garmin are pushing Connect and Basecamp.
I use Connect but also backup my rides using GTC.

garmin connect works really well. You used to get google maps but it's now Bing which I don't like as much. I find it much more slick and easier to use though than Training Centre.

It's a ll pretty piss-poor isn't it though?

I've been converting my files to Polar, but that's a pain in the arse!

I've got about 8 years worth of Polar files I'd like to convert to Garmin, if I could find an easy way. ๐Ÿ™

Have you searched the internet for a solution? There are usually ways of doing these things, but probably not an automated batch process. I have a program to convert the otherway, but you have to do it one file at a time. Only takes 30s to a minute, but it's a pain if you forget for a week or two.

Sporttracks for the PC, Ascent for the mac are the best IMHO

Golden Cheetah is OK if you want to go advanced for free or Trainingpeaks, but you need to pay for the latter if you want your workouts analysed.......(Golden Cheetah is on your Mac/PC while Trainingpeaks is on-line)

In the past I have used Sportstrack on a PC, but now use GTC and Connect on a Mac. Tinkered with Ascent and may well go back to using it.
