My Edge 1000 is finally dying.

so what to replace it with?

Edge 130

Edge 520+

Edge 820

New Edge 1030

if I need a map I use the phone so thought might dumb the garmin down

whilst I like the elemnt bolt it feels cheap compared to garmins.

I have a 520, it does everything required. But it's a bit of a faff load detailed maps though, and that's only thing i would change about it; give it more storage 100mb is not enough

If it’s just for tracking then what about a watch? Traded my 520 in for a garmin 235 and haven’t missed it.

Yeah got a 520 for my son. You’re right. New 520+ is out with more storage though

Vivoactive hr or the new vivoactive 3. Far more uses than just a bike computer, I'll never go back to a bike specific GPS.

Have you used a wahoo device?

In my experience they're much more user friendly than a garmin - and FAR more reliable too. The user experience is anything but cheap.

Probably depends on how you use it, is it easy to read the watch while you are riding? Might be good for tracking but nav, pacing, checking stats etc the dedicated device still wins, also whats the charge lie on the watch? How long does it last when your riding with it on GPS?

If you dont actually need to load or view maps then a watch gets my vote. I use a fenix 3, strap it round the bars.you can configure it to show whatever data fields you need. Things like speed, avg speed, max speed, current elevation, total ascent/descent, distance, compass, heart rate, avg heart rate etc etc, you name it, the watch can probably display it.

Battery lasts approx 12 hours from fully charged with the gps recording every second, approx 30 hours with it recording every 10 seconds.approx 2 weeks in watch mode with no gps use.

I only ever look at the watch when running for my pace and distance, I never look at it while riding, as I don't road ride so don't care for speed, cadence etc, I ride my bike for fun.

battery wise, it will last a fair few rides, and charges super quick. Hasn't been an issue so far, had it for just over a year. Do what suits you, I think I get far more value from my watch with the every day use, whilst my edge was on the bars getting used mibbe 3 times a week.

YMMV.

Sounds like an improvement on battery, got my vivoactive HR a couple of years back and the watches didn't look like they were up to it for regular riding.

If I didn’t want mapping/routing I’d be looking at the 130 or the Bolt. The 520 Plus seems an odd candidate in your list given that mapping is kind of its raison d’être (looks potentially ideal for me, though, if it’s not riddled with bugs).

I'd really recommend you try the bolt, get one second hand and sell it if you can't get on with it.
