Thinking a crosser may be a good option, as I don't (and have never) had a road bike. Would be good for training rides, with a wee bit of offroad, and also good for the short commute to work.
Any ideas, willing to go to the grand maximum.
Hopefully, it won't just be left in the shed/garage like a lot of other folks on here who buy one.
I bought a kinesis crosslight 4t and have used it regularly, it's been great. I'm running Cantis which stop me fine: disks would add weight, but would have meant I wouldn't have had to replace both rims within 12 months
I got a pannier rack as well for carrying gear / spares /lunch
I read a review in Triathlon Plus for the Planet X Uncle John http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/?page_id=1461
They rated it highly so its probably worth a look?
I like my Genesis Crox de Fer. It's not a proper cross bike in that it's got discs but it's been great for commuting which is a mixture of road and tracks and was fine in the one cross race it's been used for. It's been pretty capable on the bits of local single track I've taken it on too.
You'd need to get a disc compatible rack for it but they do exist and it does at least have the mounts for it.
Only down side is that the mud clearance seems a bit limited which may be an issue. It's not been one for me as yet but I've not taken it anywhere really muddy. It's maybe a bit on the weighty side as well due to it being steel.
I'm hoping for a Ridley (Crossbow I think) - got rack and mudguard mounts
Get some slick tyres for slightly portly but perfectly capable road bike.
About £800 ish I think.
I'm pleased with my Spesh Tricross Sport. I've not taken it off road yet but it suits me fine for road riding.
I love my cross bike (kinesis 4t) I have road bikes and MTBs and my cross bike is the most all-round capable and most used bike of all of them. Probably not a lot of practical difference between the models mentioned. Go for it.
Would have a look at the Cube Cross bikes, the 2009 models looked great and were really well specced.
Giant TCX. My MTB gets very little use since I bought it.

I'm interested in the same thing come Feb and the Kona Jake the Snake is on my radar. Also keeping a keen eye on the Cotic X for pricing and build details but I bet it comes in expensive. I'm after a light cross bike as I intend to do the odd 10mile TT on it with clip on TT bars. It'll be a real jack of all trades bike, or should that be Jake 😉
I got an Uncle John when I had the same decision to make.
But it's worth checking you can get a Planet X through your provider. I don't think Halfords offer them any more.
Just specced an Uncle John for under 1k with lots of ultegra and 105. Hmmmm looks well worth it
I got a kona Jake..Its quite good fun
Having spent 10 or so years riding full sus bikes it was quite a revalation how fast a bike could be on the road..!
roadrat?

shame about the brown colour and lack fo big (i.e. proper big frames) though
Cant beat the Scott CX Comp. Ace spec & right on the grand.
Also check out the Trek Portland if you want something with roadie tyres. Extended MTB Carbon fork, discs, 30spd 105 gears etc. They were £999 but i think they are now £1150 but you'll still find some dealers doing them at the old price on the scheme. I know of 2 shops doing this so if you're interested, let me know

The Scott CX comp doesn't look that great in the spec department to me.
http://www.scottusa.com/gb_en/product/8242/45042/cx_comp Tiagra with a little 105 thrown in to look nice where people look (rear mech).
Ive been looking for a bike with similar criteria to the OP, anyone got any experience of the revolution cross
currently on sale
Kinesis Crosslight 5T looks lovely & gets good reviews. Decent kit for the sub £1K price too.

Or this
The Zepnat is a 'proper' cross bike but it also has M/G eyes and bottle bosses. Frame only mind, but £ for £ better value than Kinesis and includes forks.
If I wasn't racing my CX bikes I'd go for the Genesis, the one without discs.
I have to say, that Boardman looks very nice, bang up to date too, I think its a shame that CB undermines his brands image by only selling it through Halfords. Still, Buy, strip and rebuild it properly and there's a spiffing-to-the max bike there.
I think this looks bluddy lurvly!
