My mum has just phoned from the Isle of Skye asking me to take up a cheap bike for my stepdad when I visit in a few weeks time.
He's about 5' 7 - 8", 65 and unlikely to be tackling anything other than potholes / fire-roads.
I'm guessing he'd like sus forks for comfort but would prolly be happy with Suntours / Darts / whatever other cheapy gear.
I notice Halfrauds are doing their Carrera Vulcan for £250 which is pretty good for the cash but they only seem to have 20" frames left.
Any ideas gratefully considered...
There's a few knocking about, like this-

A 15" will suit him quite well if he's over 60- Giants do come up big. Adjustable stem, sus forks, 21 gears and so on and it's a reasonable weight.
But he could well be happy with a Vulcan or similar if you can find one in the right size.
Are you anywhere near a Decathlon?
The Rockrider 5.2 is a steal @£200
Check the edinburgh bike co op own stuff ( revolution)
Great value for the money I believe.

Some good ideas there - cheers all. All those bikes are in roughly the right price bracket too - all good. I do wonder if he'd be better off with V brakes because he likes to tinker with stuff and most of those cheaper mechanical disc brakes sound horrible....
One thing that might be nice is that a lot of bikes like this with v-brakes now come with "power modulators". To you and me they feel like bad brakes, but they have a spring in the noodle that makes it impossible to grab the lever too hard and go over the bars whilst still keeping braking good.
Thanks for all advice - needed the bike in a bit of a hurry so after checking the Evans website, I just nipped out and bought this;
It should be fine for him and it was a lot lighter than the Carrera I lloked at in Halfrauds...
Off to stick on a pair of spare DMR V8s which are in the garage. Also, brakes need fettling - the brake levers nearly touch the bars before they do anything, and this despite waiting 25 minutes for a 'Pre-Sale Safety Inspection' The bike was already built so I've no idea what they did in the backshop for nearly half an hour. I suspect they were eating biscuits.
Good call. We use them as our hire bikes. They'll take a fair bit of abuse.
Wow! Not a single comment about long grass, cr@ppy flowerbeds, weeds.... Just when you think you know folk.........
