I need to replace the middle chain ring on my 2009 stumpjumper but not sure which ring i need. The cranks are shimano FC-M542 which i think are custom for Specialized. What chain ring do i need to buy to fit these cranks ?? i cant see a part number on the current chainring either

Youve got a wide choice as Shimano are pretty interchangeable. You are prob looking at either a deore

Or LX

Best, cheapest and longest lasting will probably be a Deore 32 teeth . They all tend to be standard these days (4 arm, 104mm BCD if you want to know).

Its this one right?

Pretty sure any deore middle will fit it and this one is the cheapest.

Interestingly, one says replacement, and one says genuine shimano, never noticed that before.

That chainest runs the same middle ring as an FC-M580 LX chainset, part number 1FU 9802.
