[#3101933]

hi all

just made the decision to build up a commuter rather than just swapping the wheels over on the one bike. Picking up a Hardrock frame at the weekend and planning on a 1x9 setup and an on-one carbon fork.

few questions...

I found an old XTR BB and chainset that i'll want to use. will this be ok as a 1x9 and will i need something to keep the chain in order? Also, ill be running a roadie cassette so will chain length be a problem if i just keep the big ring?

Also, brakes. I want to run discs F&R but dont want to spend stupid money. what would you suggest and are there good deals to be had on your suggestions?

Cheers,

Morgs

Ooooh, I dunno, could make various worthwhile suggestions here...

But you'll only ignore me and buy Hope anyway! 😉

I'd go for the cheapest hydraulic shimano brakes from Rose Bikes or Woolly Hat Shop.

BBG bash guard and a jump stop should cover things.

you should be fine running a 1x9 set up so long as you choose the right size ring for your chainset. i would suggest a 36t ring. if the middle ring on the chainset is this size and in good nock then just use that. i would recommend you remove the outer ring and replace it with a bashguard to stop the chain ring from eating your pants though. something like a dMR ringthing or similar should do the trick. you should be able to pick one up for about £15-20.
as for brakes see if there is anyone on STW flogging a pair or failing that have a look on e-bay...you should be able to grab a decent pair of shimano disc brakes for about £20...but if you want new ones again go for shimano as they would give you the best value for money in terms of cost, weight and performance.
