I've been using Bontrager tyres on my Rumblefish but keep ripping sidewalls on the trails up here in Aberdeenshire.
Any recommendations for a 2.25" plus tyre with tough sidewalls, good grip on wet roots and rocks but also light and able to run tubeless?
Thanks
For similar reasons to yourself, I've recently bought the snakeskin version of Schwalbe Nobby Nics in 29 x 2.35 (Pacestar compound & tubeless ready). So far I'm quite impressed - lot tougher in the sidewall than say Specialized Purgatory or Maxxis & Bonty tyres. Similar weight to Purgatory's, but seem to have more reliable grip on wet rock & roots than Speshes. The latest 'TLR ready' Schwalbes mount up tubeless and hold air very well with one scoop of sealant.
Only time I've felt them start to feel a bit vague is on fast flat corners, with the bike leant right over. They haven't let go on me at all, but you can feel the tyre just starting to run wide a bit. I think this is down to the softer edge knobbles on the tyre starting to deform - errrr....nothing to do with my 90+kg weight!! 😉
The 2.35's come up quite big - in fact so big that I can't use 'em on my compact 29er hardtail 'cos of toe overlap 🙁 O'course, just after I'd bought 'em I saw the 2.25 version and it looks spot on - good width and a bit lighter.
If you do decide to give 'em a try, I ordered mine from one of the on-line German bike stores - they were almost £15 per tyre cheaper than the UK!
HTH
p.s. let me know if you want to swap a 2.25 for a virtually unused 2.35!
Great reply, thanks. I'll be using 2.25".
Who did you order from, they seem to be £45 in the UK?
If its a front you're after i'd recommend the trailstar hans dampf. Same sidewall but grips much better than the nic in my view.
I didn't get on with Nobby Nics - again seemed to slide out, but probably my riding!
If you can take the weight the Hans Dampf is grippy and tough. Heard good things about the new Conty tyres, but not used them.
😆
Beat me too it. For general riding I'd go Pacestar, or Trailstar for lots of wet rocks/roots.
This is where I got mine from (though it looks like they've sold out of some of the snakeskin tyres)
