[#12096772]

Used an EBay guy for a single rear DT Swiss spoke replacement a few years ago but he’s no longer in business it seems.

My rear XM1501 27.5 circa 2016 needs a rebuild, which someone has offered to do if I get the parts. So I need 28 black DT Swiss 286/285 straight competition spokes and their squorx lock nipples, ideally in brass - any recommendations?

JEjames had decent stock of DT spokes last time I checked. Failing that, get customcutspokes or Spokes from Ryan a shout, both will cut to suit. Also, does it need to be DT? If doing a full rebuild you could try Sapim.

I've always used jejames in the past for halo and sapim d-lights but can't help but notice they've upped the prices.
Hopefully my own stocks will last last me a few more builds.

No I guess Sapim would be fine as long as they were black, same with the brass nipples.

My rear wheel says 286/285mm, which I guess is left and right, but is this essential if I can only get hold of 284 or 286 as I don’t see many 285 offerings.

Mostly JE James or Spokesfromryan here too, JRA were best for my last order but that was sapim which could cause an explosion if used in a DT wheel.

Assuming the 285/286mm is the correct length then go with 286mm, better to be 1mm over for half, than 1mm under for half and 2mm under for the other half. In general longer's the right call. Though I'm way too suspicious to trust quoted figures, I always want to measure an existing spoke or calculate from scratch. Sapim are more often available in odd numbers- don't know why- but tbh I'd still rather have 286mm.

The spoke that was replaced a couple years back was actually 284mm which hasn’t done any harm but a whole rim at 284 is probably a recipe for disaster.

TBH 284mm'd probably be fine too, there's a ton of strength in the nipple/spoke joint... But, still worth getting right.

Your 285 could be 284.5 rounded up, or 285.45 rounded down. If you know the calculated number, it would probably make the decision easier.

Can’t find stock with any of the above other than 284mm at JE James.
I’ve been a bit naive here thinking stock would be plentiful.

Cycle basket have ACI double butted spokes in blsck in 285 and 286mm. Not DT obvs but they’re still a decent spoke that I’ve used on a number of occasions now.

Used to get DT Swiss spokes from Rosebikes but not sure they’re sending to the U.K. or not now?

Ryan Builds Wheels / Spokes cuts his own spokes to length I think so would imagine you could get what you need from him too. Also found Sapim more expensive than ACI and DT Swiss though.

Cycle basket don’t seem to have straight pull.
I messaged Ryan Builds Wheels on Instagram yesterday and not heard anything; perhaps email is better.

Thanks @mudfish I’ve emailed dcrwheels

18 month leadtimes on spokes and nipples now as they can’t keep up with demand.

We have had a long line of people asking for thousands of wheelsets which they want yesterday but unfortunately we can’t magic the rims and spokes they want out of fresh air to build them. So it looks like they won’t be selling the bikes they planned too as they are struggling to find a full set of parts.

It’s going to be an “interesting” year next year for a lot of brands/shops with huge order books they can’t fulfil. It’s probably going to be a bit quiet on exciting new products for us at SuperstarComponents but in the background we are booked up on capacity for next year on medical parts so we will see what happens when supply gets more back to normal in 2022-23

Blimey, that’s a bit of a shocker across industry then, Neil.

Short of some kind of offering out the blue, I’ll just have to hope my rear wheel lasts for now.
