[#2021398]

I think I've finally decided on what c2w bike to buy. A Kona Dew Drop. I have 300 or so left on the voucher, so what upgrades. Wheels are the key thing, and possibly chainset too.

stock wheels are Deore / Formula hubs with Alex DC25.
Heavy and not very strong.
I could just get hope pro2 hubs, but what rims are good??
Anything in the middle range between deore and hope that will save a chunk of weight?

Also, recommendations for commuting tyres. Some road, some mountian (Pentlands), some cycletrack.

thanks

Yeah, Mavic Open pro rims. For tyres I used Specialized Borough CX 32C. Roll nicely on the road and smooth singletrack and give a wee bit of offroad ability. prob not the best if the majority of your riding is off-road though...

On one bike it's XT on Mavic Open Pro's. Over nearly 6 years, they've been bombproof. Rear hub was swapped out after 3 years (15000 miles), front hub needs doing.

Latest bike has Halo Aerotrack rims as it'll be discs again, so don't need the braking surface. Lighter than Open Pro's, though we'll see about durability. For the money ( I got them for £20 each), even if they only last a couple of years they'll be good value. Others to consider might be Alex XD-Lite 700c (if you can find them - OEM only IIRC), or the Condor 'Uno' rims which look good for the money.

thanks,

I'll look at the open pro and others.
Shame, but I think Hope pro2's on open pro might just push me over the 1k limit
