Mate of mine is after a wheel truing jig. I said I’d ask the collective as well as my thoughts.
It will be a seldom use thing as he’s never given it a go before but is keen to try.
Thoughts on price verses strength bla bla bla.

What you got.

DIY using the details in Roger Mussons wheel building guide. All sorts and sizes built using it.

For emergency or very occasional truing as @scaredypants says. Next up would be the self-built from Roger Musson's book. Then if your mate wants to treat himself the X-tools truing stand - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-x-tools-pro-mechanic-wheel-truing-stand

Really all you are after is a fixed frame/fork with a means of adjusting a marker.

Haha that’s the link he sent me after I sent him a £35 one off eBay.

I've been tempted by one of the $30 ebay ones but tbh every wheel I've ever build, I did in the bike, with cable ties. I just don't really feel much need to change that

I've got the X-Tools one. It's pretty solid.

I used to use an upside-down bike frame, but it gets annoying after a while. This is much better.

Disclaimer: I'm not a wheel building expert, I just make a few wheels from time-to-time when I'm bored and it's raining outside.

A possible problem with that x-tools jig

Fits hub widths up to 145mm

I have one but think it was more like £70 when I bought it.  Mine will fit a boost rear hub using the Park adaptors for through axles but only because I tweaked it with an angle grinder.

The x-tools one is fine but wait for a sale as it is often £70ish as mentioned above. Needs a bit of adjustment out of the box to centre the callipers but it is easy to do. Takes a 148 hub fine by simply putting the through axle back in the hub and sitting that in the V grooves.
