I managed to buckle my wheel on my tourer yesterday (on a completely flat and leisurely ride!) Rather than bending laterally, the buckle has ovalised(?) the wheel.
What I was wondering is whether I should try truing the wheel myself.
I have no experience of this and am aware it could go very wrong, but money ain't flowing free at the moment so a home fix would be great.
Clearly there's loads of info on the web if I do take it on, but am I asking for trouble?

You have a hop in the wheel.

I could explain, but just google "removing a hop from a wheel".

It involes tightening/loosening spokes in pairs. Just do it methodically and you won't cock it up.

No problem. Imagine by doing up pairs of spokes that you are pulling that bit of the rim towards the hub.

Remember that when you tighten the nipple, you are screwing the nipple more onto the spoke thread. If you've never done a wheel before, it's worth getting things clear in your head with a spoke and a nipple not attached to anything.
