I'm rebuilding my 24" wheel which currently has a diatec QR hub 36 hole. I plan to rebuild with a 20mm hub with 32 holes, is this possible or a no go?

You'd have a 32 hole hub and a 36 hole rim. It can be done but is not a very sensible plan at all and will cause problems with spoke lengths etc.

I wouldn't

Ok I thought the same, just finding it hard to come across a used 36 hole shimano lock hub

+1 on not doing what you thought of doing. You could get a 36 hole hub with a 6 bolt pattern and by a new disc.

would it not be cheaper/easier just to move the wheel on and buy a new 26" wheel that's what you want?
