Right .... Gonna give wheel building a try.
I have a Hope Pro 2 front hub and an 8 speed alfine rear hub.
Rims are 29er DT X470
Pro wheel builder reckons.......
➡ Front: 284.6 & 286.5
➡ Rear: 273.9 & 273.2
Do I need spokes exactly the length of what the calculator reckons?
Will 2 cross be okay? Should I go with 14mm nipples?

ive used 2 cross on the front no problems.
1mm either way on the spokes wont matter, round sizes up or down to the nearest mm.
14mm nipples fine, use brass ones though, alloy ones useless after a couple of months.
sheldon browns website will be a big help, found easily by googling.
its really not that hard if you are paying attention imo.
You'll only get spokes in even millimetres so you round them up or down and depending on brand of spoke depends what sizes they do, DT tend to do single millimetre sizes and SAPIM will only do odd or even size. 12 or 14mm nipples will be fine nipple included with all spoke are generaly 12mm three cross spoke pattern will be the best with disc brake loadings.
Spaim race are available in mm increments in MTB and 700c sizes in silver. Dt in 2mm increments.

You should be fine with 284/286 front and 274 either side rear. Check the nipple length that was used to give those figures - if it was 12mm, which is normal, you'll need to adjust for 14mm nipples if you use them (no advantage). I'd go 3-cross myself with that setup, but you'll get by ok with 2.
