I've just noticed some play on my commuter rear wheel, the rim moves by a few mm side to side. Question is, is it fine to use in the meantime until, I get a chance to sort them out at the weekend or am I going to end up stranded facing a long walk?

You won't get stranded you just need to sort asap longer it's left the worse it will get.

Any idea how long its been like that?
The bearings/hub could be on its last legs already.

No idea how long its been like it, under 100 miles since i gave it a clean and general check and i didnt notice it then. I'll break out the mtb for the rest of the week to be on the safe side.

Could be anything from loose cones to a snapped axle, to bearing cups migrating into the shell, to a loose freehub body. Come across all of them regularly, stick to the other bike just in case it's a bit serious.

So just taken the wheel apart and looks like the bearings:

Non-drive side:

Drive side:

Cleaned up side by side:

Would the worn down bearings have killed the hub? if not how do I tell what size new bearing to buy?

Wheel is a stock Pro-lite wheel that came on my Focus Mares

EDIT: A quick google suggests 1/4" bearings for wheels, so would something like this do:
