surely the number of bikes is irrelevant? the question being asked should read "what did you do with them whilst you had them?"

I do worry that the length of some lists is people looking to compensate for their own abilities by blaming the bike and trying a new one.

Also, how much must it cost to lose a hundred quid or so on so many bikes!

My "proper" bikes - ie those I've owned over the last eleven years are as follows:

F Moser road bike
2003 Specialized Rockhopper
2004 Specialized Enduro (still owned)
2008 Marin Rock Springs (given to missus)
2009 Marin Wolf Ridge (still owned)
2011 Orange Pure 7 (still owned)

Quite modest judging by some of you on here!

I think this is complete:-

MTB's

Raleigh something which got nicked
Raleigh Amazon
1995 Kona Lava Dome
1997 Dean Alu hardtail
1998 Klein Adroit (really rather lush, so fast!) - sponsored
1999 Klein Attitude Comp - sponsored
2000 Gary Fisher Paragon (replaced twice due to cracking - last frame was a Supercaliber)
2001 Scott Strike 20 (still got the frame - semi sponsored)
2002 On One Inbred (current - commuter)
2003 Giant NRS 2
2005/6 On One 456 (current)
2009 Cotic Hemlock
1992? Cannondale M500 (I think)
200X On One Inbred slot d/out (current)
2010 On One Scandal (current)

So, over time, I peaked with valuable stuff around college/uni time, then since then have become a cheap skate. And moved to Yorkshire, maybe that explains it.

I'm amazed you worry - I couldn't give a monkey's pizzle how many bikes anyone else has/had.

The wife is resigned to the fact I get bored easily. I justify it by considering that I'm well into my 40's & been riding bikes since I was about 3 years old, I've never smoked, I drink very little, I drive a 17 year old car (and only cover about 2k miles per year), I've never been out of work since my 1st step on the career ladder, and finally, I can't resist a bargain.

Indeed! Not even going to begin to try to justify myself, suffice to say I don't regret a single purchase . . . it's all learning, eh? Oh, and contrary to popular belief, I do only have three bikes.

Bikes do indeed rock!! 8)

Nope, I have changed bikes as my riding has improved and evolved. It also took a while to figure out the geometry I like.

Raleigh Marauder (Index, with a gen-yoo-ine 6-speed SIS rear)

Was that the white one? I remember they came in a bluey colour (with 15 speed?), or white, I really wanted the white one. Then some how ended up with a Raleigh Lizard which was much the same.

When I was wee:

Trike
Small bike with & without stabilisers
Raleigh Tomahawk
2 x BSA bikes with mahoosive cowhorn handlebars, 3 speed.

MTBs:

Trek 830, yellow with black splatter paint - rode it back 21 miles home after I bought it, couldn't walk properly for 2 days!
Black Alloy Saracen Frame built up from parts.
Steel Marin Pine Mountain - nice bike
Another Trek 820? - came 3rd on it on my one and only race. ❗
Ti Airborne Lancaster - Ti forks, Ti bars, Ti Stem, Ti seat post, got me over my Ti fetish period.
GT Avalanche.
GT Steel Chucker.
On-One Inbred 853 - current.
Santa Cruz Superlight - first full, now gone.
Salsa El Mar - first 29er current.

Built up my bikes from the black alloy frame onwards, except for the Marin & Trek 820.
All my bikes have been used as commuters, single speed and anything MTB orientated.
I have added the 820 from another post about bikes that you've owned probably had a couple more but can't remember at the mo.

Outta Bmx racing in da 80's and MX in da early 90's
I got back into offroad bikes with a Carrera Krakatoa in about 97.
Then I got a Saracen Tuff trax elite.
Then a GT Zaskar, and I started working in bike shops.
Rode all the new stuff, but bought a Wheeler 4x frame from a mate. I H and got a e Coiler customised for trail and DH use.
Still had use of shop bikes from Commencal and Santa Cruz but I love Orange bikes.
Got a 5am to replace the Kona and not seen any need to change since.
Coiled it up like I did with the Kona and it's good for another few years .
I still have the Wheeler and I've got a On One inbred for longer XC rides.
